Astrid lied in her bed for so long... How long had it been? A week? She was so weak... She couldn't tell anyone about this stupid nurse trying to kill her. She was too drugged to talk. She should be fine. She should be. But that poison that was still coursing through her blood, slowed her healing.
The nurse tried passing everything off, she wanted to torture Astrid for as long as possible. She knew that she hated being weak, and wouldn't stand for it. She'd kill her soon, she knew it.
They brought her meals regularly. She already had a plan forming in that head of hers.
The nurse came. Food. There it was. What she needed. "Hello Astrid. How are you feeling today?" She asked nicely.
Her niceness disgusted Astrid, but she smiled and gave a thumbs up. The nurse brought over the food and left her to it. Fool. They were all fools.
Astrid ate her food. She had to play the part of a recovering patient, or else they'd know something was wrong. She had to get out. She had to escape.
She picked up the knife and hid it quickly. They couldn't find it. She had to keep it to herself. If they took it... She might not get another one. They'd taken her weapons. Oh she was mad about that, she loved her weapons. Almost as much as if she had an actual bond with them. Maybe with her dual swords... They hummed in her hands whenever she was using them to harm or defend.
She finished her food and pushed it away from her. It was time for her to go to sleep.
She felt a sharp pain in her arm and growled. She hated this... The nurse could kill her whenever she felt like it. All it would take would be an extra amount to what she already had in her system. Oh how Astrid enjoyed with the idea of what she was gonna do. You'll eat steal and your own medicine. She mused to herself in her head. She was going to enjoy this a lot.
She turned her head to the side and strokes the knife's hilt that was at her side. She hummed. She hasn't sunk steel into flesh in a long time.
Astrid what is wrong with you?! What has happened to you? A small voice asked in her head.
She's been through so much pain. She's embraced it enough to sustain her. Another voice in her head purred to the other.
Great. Now I'm going crazy. She told herself as she mentally rolled her eyes. It was going to be a long life. If she managed to live past 20. With her life? Yeah that was probably unlikely. Very unlikely.
She shut her eyes and held a grip on the knife. She should try to get the poison out of her system. It would ensure her more strength.
She pulled her arm underneath the covers and cut off the tube. The "medicine" poured out onto her mattress. She pulled the needle out and looked away. She hated needles.
She sighed as she felt something restore back in her system. It was good to be strong. If she wasn't at a good enough strength... She wouldn't make it very far.
She shut her eyes and listened to her own thoughts before everything went dark. She wasn't even conscious of her own breathing. It was... Peaceful in a manner of speaking. But then... She started dreaming. Or rather... Was it a nightmare? A vision perhaps?
Astrid's nightmare vision
---------------------------------------------- She awoke with a start. She was in some different perspective. She watched an older looking Astrid- 18 perhaps- get out of a bed. The bed was in a cabin. This was her home. But... She shared this home with other people. Other people lived in other cabins. The cabins were separated for some reason unknown to the younger Astrid.
She watched as the Astrid got out of that bed and walked to the door, stretching. "I guess I should go for a walk tonight... It'll clear my head. Especially with Shin and all of this crazy Camp nonsense," she said. 'Who's this Shin? What?' The Astrid dreaming asked herself. Oh well. Continue on.
The adult walked out and stretched her long, thin arms. 'Dang I look good.' Dreaming Astrid thought to herself. The other Astrid continued along until she came upon the Big House. Somehow, dreaming Astrid knew what this place was. Weird.
That's when she saw it. There was a boy around Dream Astrid's age, 18, chained to the wall. She knew this boy somehow, and she cared for him deeply. Then she saw it. He didn't have a heart. Instead, there was a gaping, bloody hole in his chest. Written on his bare chest were the words, "Forever And Always." In scratchy and not exactly neat writing. Then below that was a picture of two rings intertwined. The infinity symbol.
Dream Astrid fell to her knees and tears came out of her eyes. The wind was knocked out of her as she stared on. This... This... This... This.... Was awful.... It.... Was.... All.... Her.... Fault.... She shouldn't have told him.... It would hurt him more than someone could imagine.... It drove him to commit this kind of awful suicide.... SHE DID THIS TO HIM.
She screamed. Dream Astrid screamed a scream of blood curdling sadness, realization, and agony. She couldn't lose someone so close. "LAKE!!!!!!" Dream Astrid screamed. She curled into a small ball and tore at her hair. She wasn't ripping it. She made fists in her hair as she screamed and screamed and screamed. It was awful. It was all her fault...
Astrid woke with a start. She was panting. That... That was the worst. She felt a hole in her chest. She couldn't believe what just happened. She looked around and noticed she was sweating. She had caused the bed sheets to dampen.
No... She couldn't think about that boy. Not now. Not when she had to escape. It was important she did escape.
It was morning when she saw that retched nurse come back in. She made sure she looked like she was asleep.
The nurse approached, "Aw. Such a shame that you're in so much agony." She smiled and leaned closer to her, tracing a manicured nail down her jaw line.
That's when Astrid struck. She slammed her knife into the Nurse's heart. The poison she'd coated it worked, and the Nurse was dead before she had a chance to scream.
"Have a taste of your own medicine, brat," Astrid hissed and snarled at her. She threw off her covers and dashed for her weapons.
With much skill and ease, she slipped each and every on within seconds. She felt powerful. She smiled. She did love plunging that knife through her heart. So much, that she left it there as a reminder. A reminder to those to stay in their places; or they might suffer an even worse death.
She slammed through the door and ran. She ran and ran and ran. She loved the wind whipping through her hair and threw out her arms. She dashed through the forest and laughed. Laughed.
It was so great to just be... Free. She'd never thought she'd really been caged in, but she knew she had been. Being on her own was the best. Her broken soul would never mend. But her embracing of who she was, what she was, that held her up.
She continued dashing through the forest. Not stopping to look behind her.
