i felt as if a giant mass of stone had fallen on my head, leaving me half dead on the ground.
"what do you mean" i whispered.
"what i said" he just shrugged.
"you can't be serious Maxx" i said incredulous. "she's my best friend, you both are my best friends you can't just-"
"Nicky it's my life, i'm sorry but you have no say in this. i just wanted to let you know cause you deserve to know the truth. but that's it. i made my decision and nothing you will say can change my mind"
i was speechless. my two best friends. breaking up. how would i cope with that? what side should i take? i pondered whether to tell Maxx Brie was coming to surprise him. he seemed to notice i had been silent for a while and gently took my hand.
"Look Kiki i don't want you to feel bad about this. this is life. people break up and it's normal. i just feel like we don't belong anymore and i want her to suffer as little as possible. the only thing i ask for is, if you have any tip on how to tell her i'll be glad to listen to you. i'll see her in almost a month anyway, so" he shrugged.
i kept thinking of Brie's surprise. this would go horribly wrong. i just couldn't tell him could i?
"come here you" he said with his sweet voice and pulled me in for a hug. i had tears threatening to fall down my cheeks but i managed to keep them away. when he let go of him i just forced myself to smile and we got back on the bus.
I spent the rest of the night in a horrible state of mind. my brain was fighting against itself and that was not good. should i tell Maxx about Brie coming? maybe not. Brie would have killed me. But Maxx was my best friend i couldn't keep him in the dark.
I got the chance to be alone with him after the ATL set. everybody was backstage collecting their stuff and Maxx announced he needed to use the toilet before leaving. i waited for him outside the men's bathroom (i know it sounds horrible) and when he finally came out i pulled him in for a hug. "what's that for?" he chuckled.
"i... need to tell you something"
"sure what's up?"
i couldn't look him in the eyes. i was drawing imaginary circles on the floor with my left foot. i didn't know where to begin. "you remember that thing you told me about Brie?"
he nodded and stared at me but i didn't raise my eyes.
"well i...uhm... thought about that"
"ok. so you mean you have some suggestions on how i should deal with it?"
"uh... yeah?"
"awesome! i'm listening!"
crap. "maybe you should... take her to the side... and try to convince her it's for the best, i don't know"
"yeah. it won't be easy though. but i promise i'll try! thanks baby girl" he said giving me a kiss on the cheek. "c'mon the boys are waiting for us"
i was about to stop him, tell him i wasn't done, tell him Brie was coming to surprise him and it'd have been a disaster, but i didn't. i just couldn't. relunctantly i followed him.
the day had come. i woke up at 7.45 and got dressed. no breakfast. how weird. anyway, at 8.30 i was on the other side of the town. the cab driver killed the engine and i got out. "wait here please. i'll be back in 5 minutes" he nodded and i started walking towards the white house on the other side of the street. it was Brie's uncle and aunt's place. it seemed pretty big and i noticed a nice garden with a basket net and some balls. they must have children, i thought. i was about to knock when the door swung open.
"Nickyyyy" Brie yelled jumping on me.
i hugged her back "hi there"
"i saw you from my window and i got ready. i'm so excited! let's go c'mon!"
she took my hand and started walking towards the cab but suddently stopped and headed back to the house. "hold on a second, i want to quickly introduce you to auntie Mary. she's the sweetest, you'll love her. Maxx won't be up until midday anyway, i know him way too well" i was dragged inside. the house was neat and tidy. a little bit too much for my liking. it was as if it was all fake and no one lived there. we got to the kitchen and i saw a lady sit at the table, a mug of coffee in her hand, reading the newspaper. she must have been in her late 50s. she was exactly like the house, elegant and gentle, a neat bun on her head. she raised her gaze from the newspaper and smiled at us.
"auntie Mary i just quickly wanted to introduce you to one of my bestest friends in the world!"
she got up and put out her hand for me to shake "you must be Nicky. it's a pleasure to finally meet you. Brie has been talking about you non-stop for the past few days"
Great. guess what that didn't make me feel any better. it made evrything even worse actually if possible. i just felt like running away, but i shook her hand instead. "it's a pleasure to meet you too madame"
i had tried to sound as formal as possible because i didn't know how to address her. she let out a small laugh and said "please Nicky, call me Mary". it was weird to hear a lady like that call me Nicky instead of Nicole but i didn't mind it. i liked her.
"Sit down guys. i'll get you some coffee. have you had breakfast yet Nicky?"
i shook my head and sat down. then i suddently got to my feet again "i actually think we should get going Brie. the cab is outside waiting-"
"don't you worry about that. i can take you guys to the venue later" she offered and got outside to pay the cab driver. i saw her talk to the man and after a couple of minutes the cab drove away.
she got back in and served us breakfast. i actually had just coffee and some cookies, while Brie poured herself a glass of milk.
Mary was really nice and we talked about random stuff. at a certain point though she came out with a "so how are things going with your boyfriend? Cody right? i know who that guy is, he's friends with Maxx"
i imediately shot a death look to Brie who just giggled "i told you they're not boyfriend and girlfriend just yet"
i felt the urge to punch her in the face. she got up though and crouched next to me. "i have a little surprise for you. i bought it the other day and thought it was just perfect for you" she handed me a small envelope which i quickly opened. it was a necklace with a small silver plectrum. it was so cool. i didn't know what to say, guilt and impotence invading me again. "oh Brie..."
she quickly jumped to her feet. "c'mon it's time to go now!" she said, full of energy.
i just silently got up and followed her outside.
Brie kept talking during our trip but i wasn't really listening. she told me about how she was planning on surprising her boyfriend and other stuff like that. i kept nodding and smiling, hoping she wouldn't notice i wasn't paying attention. we finally arrived at the huge parking lot. she gave her aunt a kiss and jumped out of the car. "so here's the plan. you let me inside the bus, then i..." she stopped. i followed her gaze and realized Maxx and the boys were chilling in front of the bus.
she dropped her plan, whatever it was, and ran towards him, jumping into his arms. i saw him hug her back but when he looked up and saw me his face was incredulous. his eyes where screaming, why did you do this to me?! and i felt a sense of devastation inside my body. i collapsed on my knees and caught my breath. Austin came and picked me up, smiling as if nothing had happened. lucky him, who knew nothing.
hi guys i'm back from vacation! i'll try and start to upload regurarly again. see you guys soon! love youu :)
