Chapter Eight

Kerigan

My elbow connected with rough, crumbling wood. I felt my skin rip. I felt warmth, lovely blanket like warmth cover my skin. My ear drums popped and everything went blurry for a second as my heart beat pounded through my head. I stared up at the sky.

Toby leaned over me, his eyes wide with worry and wonder, and I looked to my side to realize I was engulfed in flames.

They never touched my skin, though.

I sat up, looking back at the fire, and I push my hand straight into the flames. My hand tingles, and warms up, but does not burn. I frown and stand up, staring at it.

"What the fuck just happened?" LJ demanded, his eyes wide. Him and Jeff were standing up, both looking confused and freaked out, and EJ just stared at me. Frowning, I shook my head, looking down at my hands.

That... Was so cool... Fire doesn't hurt me? I wonder if I can control it, like Skylar! Cmon, fire... Come to my hand. I thought quietly, imagining a small ball of fire jumping to my palm and dancing there.

A few moments later, it did. A brilliant blue ball of flame spun and bounced around on my hand, and everyone gasped, flying backwards away from it. I giggled and played with the small flame, twisting it and sliding it between my hands.

"K-Kerigan... H-H-How a-are you..." Toby stutters, his body quivering as I played with the flames. His eyes kept shifting between me and the ball, nervously almost. I shake my head to convey I had no idea how I was doing what I was doing, but I was enjoying myself.

"Grow." I whispered gently to it, and the flame exploded in my hand, growing as big as my head. Toby squeaked and fell over the chair, and it was then I noticed how badly he was shaking and twitching. I clapped my hands together to diminish the flames, and runs over, helping him up. He looked down, shaking from more than just his Tourettes.

"Toby?" I whispered gently, and he closed his eyes, covering his mouth as squeaks tried to escape. I frowned deeply and hugged him close, trying to help him calm down. He clung to me, and LJ poured water onto the flames. I winced as it hissed out, like it was in pain.

"I-I think its time for bed..." LJ whispered, and we all nodded in agreement.

The next time Grossman comes over, I had a plan. Not only had I learned and perfected how to control an established flame, I had also learned how to summon a flame. It freaked everyone out at first, but they eventually grew accustomed to the constant flame being ignited in my fingers.

I saw Isaac appear downstairs and heard him laughing as he stepped inside. I pulled on a black jacket and my converses, shoving some money, jewelry, and my pocket knife into the pockets of the zip up. I also pushed one of Jeffs knifes, a switch blade, into my waistband, for easy access. The hour passed quickly, and he walked towards the woods as I quietly slipped out of the window and down off the porch roof. Just like Toby's room back home: entirely too easy to get in and out of. I grinned and followed behind the guy silently. I frowned and tried to keep up, but he was walking too fast.

My foot fell on a crunchy leaf.

He spun, a knife impaling itself in the tree next to my head. I yelped and grabbed it, throwing it back. It ripped through the fabric on his shoulder, but don't cut skin. He grunted and pulled another, throwing it straight at me. I screamed slightly and threw up my hands.

"What the-" I open my eyes to see the knife suspended in mid air, and his eyes were widened in wonder. I grabbed the knife, and walked closer.

"Listen, I need your help." I hissed, and twisted the knife so I was holding the blade, handing it back to him. He stared at me through the beak-like mask he was wearing, the medical ones from the times of the plague. I smiled.

"Who..." He whispered, hesitantly taking the knife and placing it into his pocket. I held out my hand, and a ball of flame lit the surroundings. He yelped and jumped back, then widened his eyes. "Couch witch!" He gasped, and I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms.

"Yeah. Listen, dude, I need you to get me some things from the over realm, and I'm running out of time." I pulled out the forty dollars, holding it out to him. "I need some medicine, but the kind you can only get with a prescription, so you need to steal it."

"Forty dollars for meds? Seems like a lot."

"I need a lot of meds." I retorted, holding out the sticky note with everyone's prescription, which was the name of the medicine they took and the dosage. He raised an eyebrow.

"Keep your money." I frowned deeply, and opened my mouth to argue when he held up a hand. "Teach me how to do that." He nodded to my hand, an the flame held upon it.

"I... Don't know if I can." I mumbled.

"Try. That'll be payment enough." He smirked and snatched the list from me. Reading it over, he scratched his hair. "You a dealer?"

"What? God no. They're for..." I cut off, and glance at the house, "me. I'm really messed up and I'm running out." His eyes lifted to mine.

"There's three different anti-depressants, an anxiety medicine, two different medicines for ADHD and ADD and at least four combinations of pills that would kill you if taken together. But whatever, your life." He shrugged and smirked, and I rolled my eyes. "Anything else?" I went to shake my head, before frowning and nodding slowly.

"Yeah... A pack of Sonoma Menthol 100's. And... Some vanilla cigars." I smiled as he nodded and scribbled that down next to the meds. He held out a hand, and I shook it vigorously before turning and running back to the house, scrambling into the window and kicking off my shoes seconds before Toby opens the door, smiling at me. I stood up, and kissed his cheek.

"Hey b-babe." He whispered, and collapsed on the bed, holding his arms open for me. I smiled and sighed as I plopped into bed next to him, cuddling into his chest as we fall asleep slowly and peacefully.
