Chapter Thirteen

Kerigan

"That doesn't seem safe at all." Grossman commented as I stood there with my arms crossed.

"Well, I need to know if I can contain something like that." I snapped back. He sighed and pulled out what looked like a rolled cigarette. Lighting it with a flame he created in his own palm, he took a long, deep drag and blew it out.

I immediately recognized the sharp, naughty scent and frowned, waving it away. "Don't blow that at me, I don't need second hand high from you."

"Helps calms my nerves. Want a puff or two?" He asks, and I hold up my hand.

"No thanks, Isaac. If and when I ever smoke pot, it'll be out of a pipe. Now. Can you get me C4, or not?" I snarled. He contemplated it for a second, taking another drag and blowing away from me.

"I could, yeah."

"Will you?"

"I don't know. I get you a lot, what's in it for me?" He asked. I noticed that note in his voice, not suggestive, not... Creepy like the first night. Just hopeful, which confused the shit out of me. Usually guys want some head or something when they ask you that.

Pushing my hair back angrily, I blinked my drying, tired eyes. "Listen Isaac, do you know how much of a tole this has been taking on me? I'm not immortal like you. I can't just sleep this drain of energy off." I grumbled irritably. His eyes softened and he sighed.

"Yeah, fine... I'll get you some C4." I smiled and hugged him tightly. He arms enveloped me, and I pulled back.

"Thanks dude. It's getting late, Toby should be back soon. I'll see you in a few days?" I took a few steps back, watching as he nodded and shoved one hand into his jean pocket, the other one dangling loosely as it dropped from a half-hearted wave goodbye. The rolled joint hung from his lips. I turned, and jogged back to the house, running into LJ on the way. He had his hands in his pockets and I bumped his shoulder. He seemed distracted.

"Sup, Clown?" I teased.

"You know... You really shouldn't lead him on like that." He mumbled, almost like he was trying to talk to himself, but his tone was accusing. I blinked in confusion.

"Huh?" He stopped and did a 180, suddenly staring down at me.

"Isaac. You're leading him on."

"What? No I'm not! I'm teaching him magic for Christ's sake!" I snapped. Jacks face twisted.

"He's smitten with you. I just- hope he doesn't get violent about it."

"He doesn't like me Jack!" I yell.

"Kerigan, you didn't know Toby liked you until you two practically screamed it at each other. You're not the most prone to picking up on these things." I frowned as he turned and walked into the house, leaving me to my thoughts on the front porch.

I waited nervously for Isaac, wringing my hands together around my worry stone. My new one, Toby forgot mine in the OverRealm. I heard grass crunch, and looked up at him. He smiled, a heavy looking cloth bag flung over his shoulder.

"Sup, Couch Witch, I got you 5 pounds of-"

"Isaac, you don't- like me, do you?" I asked suddenly, almost vomiting the words. He looked straight at me and I hope, for a second, please say no, please say no.

Instead, he blushed and rubbed the back of his head.

"I-It's that obvious, huh?"

I groan and fling my head into my hands.

"Isaac you know who my boyfriend is! You know how jealous he can get!" I yelled. He sighed and shoved both of his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah, I know.. That's why I didn't want to say anything. You don't like me... You're in love with Toby. But being around you makes me happy. You're the first girl I've ever met that I didn't want to rip to pieces and craft furniture out of." He chuckled slightly, and I lifted my lip in a disgusted sneer. "I'm many things, but I'm no girlfriend stealer. I'm fine with just being friends." He smiled, and I watched him in surprise.

"You... Really are a lot more mature than I thought you were.." I mumbled.

"Thanks. Now, wanna blow some shit up?"

"Uh.. No... Thanks." I mumbled, taking the bag. I hesitate before mumbling, "let's cut this meeting short. I'm feeling sick..." I lied, and he nodded, awkwardly patting my back before retreating back into the woods. The air that hung around me was heavy, dense, and suffocating. I slowly dragged my way to the house, and walked in, following directions upstairs to find Toby snoring slightly on the bed.

I loved him, so much. The sight of him, his mere presence made me happy. And I greatly appreciated Isaac trying his best to avoid drama. Smiling, I laid down next to Toby, and snuggled into his back. He smiled and wiggled against me. Yeah... Really happy. That's why you're escaping.

I said I was happy, not stupid.

Approximately two weeks later, Jack let it slip that Isaac had a crush on me.

As you can imagine, all hell broke lose. Toby started screaming at Jack, blaming him for bringing Isaac around in the first place. I heard from upstairs. Then he came to me and started yelling that I should have never left the house, like I was told. However, I fought back.

"Maybe if you didn't keep me locked up here, I wouldn't have had to sneak out!" I snapped, after having been chastised for the last ten minutes.

"Y-YOU should have L-LISTENED!" He yelled back, starting to continue when I'm off the bed, a blue ball of flame dancing defensively around my curled fists.

"YOU locked me up! YOU kidnapped me! YOU HAVE KEPT ME PRISONER HERE! I HAVE BEEN ON MY BEST BEHAVIOR AND I MAKE ONE FRIEND AND ITS SUDDENLY ALL MY FAULT THAT IM A LIKABLE PERSON?" I spat out. My eyes were watering, even if my voice was shaking in anger. "NONE OF THIS WAS MY CHOICE! I choose a friend, and YOU will respect that!"

"Respect what! You probably th-threw yourself onto him!" He snapped, and I took a step forward.

"EXCUSE ME? ARE YOU ACCUSING ME OF CHEATING, YOU PSYCHOTIC HOMICIDAL MANIC CLOCK!" I finally snapped. He had crossed a line much further than he should have. He completely obliterated the line.

And then I felt the sting across my cheek.

I grabbed my cheek and stared at him, tears of pain stinging my eyes. For the first time ever, his anger didn't change. He stared at me like he hated me.

At the exact same time, we noticed, from the corner of our eyes, Isaac walking up towards the house for practice.

He turned, an locked the bedroom door behind him as I kicked at it.
