Chapter 22: (Karmin's POV)
"I feel queasy. Should I be feeling this way? I shouldn't be feeling this way." My muttering only earns a response of Carla's eye roll as she tugs one curler carefully from my brown tresses. "I mean, I have been engaged to him for two years. And I've seen him naked on various occasions. But I've never been this nervous. My stomach is fluttering. I don't believe that's normal or healthy for any person to be experiencing, do you?"
Her laugh echoes off the walls of the small room we are in as she leans forward and whispers, "I don't think it's normal to be experiencing my best friend wackadoodling out. Or healthy for you to be talking this much. Yet I am fine. And you will be too. You're simply over thinking it." Another curler rolls from my hair.
My sky blue nails, perfectly manicured just for this occasion, slightly sparkle as I tilt my hand to the right just enough for the light to hit it at the right angle. Attempting to relieve my mind of its wandering and devious thoughts of destruction, I continue to do this, like a curious toddler gazing at themselves in a mirror. Nervousness is not my typical momentum, but right now, I am an anxiety mess. "Are you almost done?" I complain, seeing as there is no other way out of this but to furiously entertain and distract myself which can be done with Carla.
"Almost, just, hold still!" Her hands roughly grab my ahold of my face between her palms, facing my forward as she finishes my hairstyle for the ceremony. "Geez, you're like a five year old." Her huff has me laughing as I look at her reflection in the mirror, her face glowing as she focuses her energy on finishing my hair since she'd done everything else.
"I told you, I am nervous. I feel like I am going crazy," My fingernails dig into the other's palm as I try to get a full grasp on the butterflies in my stomach.
"You're making me go crazy." Carla jokes, easing my nerves just a bit more, making it easier to breathe.
"That baby kicking you is making you go crazy." I tease back, eyeing her small, but adorable baby bump which is fathered by Skip himself. She nods, pushing back a stray hair from her eyes.
"Ain't that the truth." We share a laugh and she holds me at arms length, eyeing me up and down, a proud smile on her lips. But when her eyes meet mine, tears well up in the waterline. "This is really happening, isn't it?" Her whisper sounds so large in this small room and for the first time in a while, I see her realize that this is our future- that we are growing up. I nod, not trusting myself to not burst into tears should I choose to speak. "Oh god. I can't believe- after everything..." Her voice breaks and her sentence trails off, but being best friends, I know where she is going with her small speech.
I hold my arms out for her, to which she runs into, burying her face in the crook of my neck for a moment. "We are still going to be together. You and Skip literally live next to Gordon and I. We will see each other basically every day if not nearly every hour..." I tease, although I know she is seeing the bigger picture with her baby on the way and the day today. I kiss her forehead in a sisterly way, to which we pull apart, her fingers sliding beneath her eyes to wipe away the tears. "We both ended up in amazing arms. You'll be fine without me for a couple of weeks." I smile, her laughing as she looks me over once more.
She sighs, an excited grin replacing her momentary bittersweet one as she claps her hands together in the same delight she had that night three years ago for our stationed Christmas Eve dinner. "Deja vu?" Her smirk and raised eyebrow says she planned that move out since Gordon proposed.
