~~~ North City~~~~
Jenner ran down the snow-covered steps with Lacy, "Careful, Jen." I called the warning to him as he fell. I giggled and helped him stand. "Momma, let's find an Inn before I freeze." He said as his teeth chattered. I handed him his fallen glasses and noticed a man watching us. Had he seen Jenner's eyes? Instead of an Inn, we found a coffee shop. After buying us some Hot Chocolate, we sat in the booth. It was nice for a moment.
A group of men watched us from a few tables over as Jenner laughed at Lacy's clumsiness.
One of the men was from before. Instantly, I got a bad feeling from them. We had left the warm place and headed farther North. The map of the North was bought before coming here and we found the snow-covered way to Briggs.
It was almost halfway there that Lacy had looked behind us. I looked to and saw the group of four men. The ones from the coffee shop. "We need to hurry, Jenner." I mumbled to the boy and he nodded. We walked faster, but they started to run. So, we ran. Fear was in my mind as Jenner struggled through the snow. They're catching up.
Suddenly, I was jerked back. Lacy braked and growled, very threateningly. She attacked the large man and got his leg good. Muffled curses came from him. They all had on ski-masks'. One of them swung a crowbar at her and hit her right in the jaw. She whimpered, but didn't let go. "Mommy!" Jenner tried to run to me, but one of the men shoved the blonde boy back. I struggled to him and the hands tightened around me.
"Jenner! Don't touch him!!" Even with my yelling, they only laughed. A man kicked my boy in the face and his glasses came off, "Told you he's an Ishbalan rat." He spoke loudly. I spat at him and got a slap across my face. The biting cold added to the sting. I glared at him and he muttered something before going back to Jenner.
I struggled and fought as they hurt him. They kicked, hit, and made him cry. Those red eyes didn't leave mine as I struggled. My nerves were so jumbled as I fought and the man held me down. His hands moved around and my own wrist were now tied. He turned me onto my back and I faced him. Without thinking, I tapped my foot. Snow turned to ice and covered the bleeding boy. It is a shield to protect him. Lacy had been laying still, but I put one over her too. A sharp pain to the back of my face brought me to look at the man on top of me. My foot tapped again and blood came from him. Snow had stabbed through his stomach and he withered in pain. No, he would bleed to death now.
My vision went blurry, but I could see. Barely. There was a knife in my ribs. How did I not notice that? My body wouldn't move though and I could only watch as they beat the barrier with the crowbar. The men got him. They called him bad things and his little hand reached out for me. I needed to move.
The most I could do was tap my finger. I took out two of them and was going for the other two when a gun sounded. No, not from the men attacking us. From a man in a white uniform. He had on a white hat and a warmer over his nose and mouth. Was he here to help? Another shot came from his gun and the last man fell.
The world around me had started to edge to darkness. I reached to Jenner one last time before it consumed me.
There was an annoying sound that wouldn't stop. It's a simple beep and I didn't like it. I opened my eyes and looked around. Where was I? The memories came back and I sat up so fast I had a head-rush. "Jenner?!" I yelled for the boy and looked around. The room is pure white. I faintly notice that I'm hooked up to a machine. Next to me was another bed. On the bed was the familiar blonde boy.
I relaxed, until I saw how he looked. Jenner was hooked onto a Life Support System and was bandaged heavily. My monitor went crazy as the beeps quickened. Two nurses rushed in and looked shocked to see me up. Even with the sharp pain in my side, I stayed sitting up. "Miss, please lay back down." The older one asked with worry.
Instead, I moved my legs over the side of the bed. With the nurses in a flustered rush to get a doctor, I stood up. My hands wrapped around the I.V and I took off the Heart Monitor stickers. The I.V stand was used to help me walk. "Jenner." I called to him softly, pushing past a nurse. Is he going to wake up?
My fingers brushed his bruised cheek and I felt tears come to my eyes. No one has every tried to hurt him because not many cared of Ishbalan blood now. Yet, here he is. "What are you doing out of bed?!!" A woman shouted at me and I looked back at her. She was tall and beautiful. Long blonde hair, full lips, a strong face, blue eyes, and she was glaring at me like I was a criminal. Yet, I didn't feel intimidated. My worry was only for the boy I raised, "Do you know if he will wake up?" I asked her quietly.
I didn't care if she wasn't a doctor, I just wanted some reassurance. This was the only thing that I cared about. The woman softened her features, "I don't know." She said honestly. She seemed to understand my mood. I nodded my head numbly. My eye went back to the blonde boy. He looked like he was sleeping.
A hand on my shoulder made me jump and I tapped my foot without a thought on who it was. My mind thought we were being attacked again as a wall from the ground knocked off that hand. Blue-green eye didn't leave Jenner's face. "Elizabeth, look at me." The voice demanded and I did so. My good eye met with her.
The wall went down with another foot tap and I didn't care if anyone knew about my alchemy now. My mind only wanted for Jenner to be okay. I sat back on my bed, but faced to were I could see the boy. "I'm Olivier Armstrong. One of my men found you two in the snow being-" "I remember, Olivier." I interrupted the woman. My mind seemed to be elsewhere at the moment and I felt blank.
Olivier sighed and crossed her arms. We were quiet until a doctor walked in. He checked me over and I answered any questions. Then, he checked on Jenner. The basic vitals from the monitors and making sure he didn't have any infections. "When will he wake up?" I asked the bald man in the white coat. He looked me over, "Who are you to the Ishbalan?" I glared and stood up. The boy didn't need more discrimination. "Jenner is my son and you will keep in my that I will kill you for discrimination." My loose hair covered my bad eye and I stared the older man down. The room suddenly got colder and he gave a shaky nod before stuttering an answer, "H-he shows no signs o-of waking up."
The answer didn't satisfy, "Hemorrhage?" My question made him think about it. I suppressed an eye roll and he fumbled with the chart. "Never mind, I'll look myself." I pushed past him and checked his head, taking the chart from the nervous old man. Yes, it was a Hemorrhage. Subdural. We need to wait for some kind of reaction to the light prescription of drugs. I sighed again and rubbed his cheek. My baby boy... "You can leave now, Doc. I got it." My voice was low and I didn't turn. It was when he left that Olivier spoke again, "You a doctor?" I looked at her more closely. She wore a uniform. "No, I trained as one though. When I was younger." I answered. I could tell she had much more to ask me, but refrained.
A knock was heard, "Come in." I called. This is still our room. A large man came in. He had a black Mohawk and stringy mustache thing. He was in a uniform and had an Auto-Mail arm. I knew Winry would have loved it. "I figured you would like your things when you woke up." He stated with a small blush. The hospital shirt was a little tight. I could only nod as he set my suitcase on my bed.
I immediately checked it and noticed my guitar wasn't in sight, "Where's my guitar? And Lacy, our dog?" My question went to the man. There was no accusation. Just curiosity about the two. "Your guitar is in the waiting room with the boy's things. I'm sorry to say that the dog didn't make it." He was careful of what he said. Trying not to sound harsh. Lacy fought bravely and I will miss her.
I gave a small nod and pulled out our pictures. Olivier raised an eyebrow at them, "You two travel a lot?" She picked up one with us in Abaski Rock. Jenner was standing at the edge of a cliff with Lotto and it was a perfect sunset. I smiled, "Yeah. For around five years. That's Abaski Rock, the East Dessert. We'll go back there when he wakes up." My words made the man look at me.
"Are you sure he will wake up?" That was Olivier. She sounded neutral about it. "I-I hope he does... he's my strong boy." My tears threatened to fall and my voice wavered. Jen said he would be here. With me. The blonde woman put a hand on my shoulder and I let them fall. "P-parents are suppose to die before their kids, so Jen can't die."
With that said, I wiped away my tears. No more crying when I don't know for sure. The cards are in the air and could come down anyway. For the rest of the day, I told them stories about our travels. It kept my mind from this moment. Olivier would smiled and laugh with Buccaneer as I smiled. Yes, Jenner has to wake up and live. Without him I don't know what to do.
