Sometime later, maybe about an hour or two, I woke up. I was lying in bed, shivering, the middle of September had brought the cold. And right now, it was freezing.
I heard the rustle of blankets, along with chattering teeth and faint sobs. I looked over at Carter, the whole of my room illuminated by the moon. It seemed to be pouring in through all four windows. I wouldn't be surprised. He had burritoed himself and was facing away from me.
Even wrapped in all the blankets I could tell he was freezing. His gentle sobs echoed throughout the room.
I lifted the covers, my legs instantly becoming bombarded with the freezing air. I swung my feet onto the floor and yelped. The floor boards were ice cold.
Carter quickly wiped his face and turned to face me. "S-sorry, did I um, wake you up?" he stammered.
"No." I smiled lightly. It wasn't completely a lie. I wasn't really sure what woke me up. Maybe my conscious told me Carter needed somebody; maybe his sniffling did wake me up. Either way I didn't mind.
I stood up and threw on a pair of sweat pants that I found in my dresser. "Come on." I said impatiently, still half asleep. Carter unburritoed himself and put on his shirt. He walked over and I threw a pair of sweats to him, he slipped those on too.
I started walking toward the door. I didn't hear Carter's footsteps behind me.
Rolling my eyes I turned around. Carter was staring out of the window looking at the moon...again...looking perfect. I shook my head "Damn it!" I thought. "Get a hold of yourself Avery!"
I grabbed his wrist and started pulling him out and down the stairs. We stumbled into the kitchen....Okok, I tripped at the bottom step and Carter caught me before I could hit the ground. I was apparently becoming a klutz. Was it weird that it only started happening when he showed up?
I took the pot I had washed earlier and shook the excess water from it. I filled it with milk and put it on the stove on simmer to warm it up. I turned around and noticed that Carter was sitting on the counter again. His head low and hands clenched into fists. His form was shaking. I walked over and stood between his legs, not giving a shit how weird it was. I placed one hand lightly on his thigh and used the other to lift his chin. Tears clung to his cheeks and finally slid down, dripping onto his shirt. His eyes were squeezed shut.
"Hey." I whispered. His eyes opened. My heart squeezed.
Carter looked down at me with sad eyes. I put my hand on his other thigh. "Everything's going to be ok." I said to him. He slid forward and dropped to the floor.
Yet again, our faces were inches apart. My breath caught. I was extremely aware of the shortening gap between us. "Thanks." Carter whispered back, I was able to feel his hot breath on the tip of my nose and my heart beat started to gain pace. Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around my waist, my arms automatically wrapped back around him. We stood like that for a while, and it was....nice.
I looked at the milk, it was starting to steam. I quickly grabbed two mugs from the cabinet and filled them. I added some chocolate syrup to both and stirred.
We headed back upstairs and sat on my bed, we talked just about the rest of the night. Apparently we shared an interest in quite a few things.
"Well, I really like punk rock, metal, glam metal and heavy metal" Carter said shyly when I asked the kind of music he listened to.
