June had finally come round, and with it the summer heat, as well as my birthday. "My little boy is becoming a man!" my mom shouted as I came down the stairs for breakfast that morning. She pinched my cheeks and kissed my face repeatedly. "Chill mom, im only 17." I tried to push her off of me "Well, your growing up." My father said behind the morning paper.
I sat at the table beside my father who picked up his steaming cup of black coffee before bringing it behind the paper and sipping loudly. Mom walked from the stove back to the table and pushed a large plate of pancakes toward me. I counted about five, and they were served with two fried eggs and a large helping of bacon. "Mom...this is too much, I'm on a diet remember?"
I had weighed about 210 pounds in April. I had lost 20 since then. With the rowing season no longer in season, I had to start working out every day on my own. Crew hadJune had finally come round, and with it the summer heat, as well as my birthday. "My little boy is becoming a man!" my mom said as she pinched my cheeks and kissed my face repeatedly. "Chill mom, im only 17." I tried to push her off of me "Well, your growing up." My father said behind the morning paper.
I looked at the clock on the radio, nine thirty. I shoveled down two of the pancakes, a bit of the eggs and a slice of bacon. I got up, put my plate into the dishwasher and walked to the fridge. I took out a carton of orange juice. I shook it too see how much was left. There was only enough for about a glass, so I chugged straight from the carton.
"Avery!" my mother screached at me. "Yes?" I replied as I tossed the now empty carton into the trash. She rolled her eyes and scoffed as I kissed her on the cheek and thanked her for breakfast. "By the way, we need more juice." I said as I left the kitchen.
I ran up the stairs and into my room. I changed into my swim trunks and checked my phone. Jessica, my girlfriend, had texted me a bit over ten minutes ago.
Were still going 2 the riverfront with Jack and Amy 2day right?
I texted her back with one hand while I brushed my teeth.
yeah, on my way now, about to leave the house.
Just as I pressed send, the phone slipped out of my hand and hit the hard wood floor with a shatter.
"Shit!" I said loudly. I was afraid to pick it up, but I did anyway. "Oh damnit." The entire screen had a crack running from the top right corner to just above the bottom left corner. Smaller cracks protruded from the main one. It vibrated in my hand.

I threw a few sandwiches into a backpack, I volunteered to bring lunch, Amy was bringing drinks, Jack was bringing snacks, and Jessica was bringing some frisbees, footballs, and other things we could use there.
"Ugh! I dropped my phone." I said as I handed my mother the broken piece of junk. It wasn't anything fancy, it was a way outdated Nokia N95 that had grainy video quality and took forever to pull up the internet. It was a phone that my dad had used for years before giving it to me when I had turned 14 and they thought I was old enough to have a phone.
She sighed "Im telling you Anthony, he's not ready." "Oh please" replied my dad. "They didn't and never have made any cases to protect them like phones nowadays. Besides, that thing is a decade old which makes it a dinosaur. We are living in a technological revolution you know."
"Yes, dear, I know." My mother replied with an eye roll. At least I knew where I got my attitude from.
I raised an eyebrow at their conversation. "What are you guys talking about?"
