The smell of smoke filled my sinuses, causing me to cough out of a deep sleep.
Not this dream again. I mentally sighed.
The fire alarms in the hall started to go off as smoke billowed in from under my door. Carter sat up and his eyes immediately changed, a look of fear and rage in his features. That's when I realized, this was no dream.
"Sebastian" Carter hissed, his voice full of malice. He jumped over me and ran to the closet, pulling out two backpackpacks I had stowed in there for hikes or camping. He threw one to me. "Pack what clothes you can. Fast. We need to get out of here." I quickly threw on Jeans, a hoodie, and a pair of sneakers..
"What about my mom?" I cried frantically as I stuffed as many pairs of pants, shirts, underwear and socks into my bag as I could.
"I'll go see if she's home." He zipped his bag and thrust the door open, allowing a large cloud of smoke to rush into my bedroom, and ran down the hall. The walls of the upstairs flickered orange and grew brighter with each second. I started to sweat as I choked on the gaseous fumes that filled my lungs.
I grabbed my wallet, car keys, cigarettes, and a wad of cash I kept in a ziplock and stashed in the tank of the toilet. You never know, right? I zipped the bag as Carter came rushing back in coughing, his face already smudged with ash and soot.
"She's not in her room, I don't think she's here." He coughed again.
"Oh Aaaveryyyyy" cooed a husky voice, followed by a maniacal chuckle.
A shrill scream echoed through the far off rush of the flames.
"Mom..." I gasped. I threw open my bedroom window and tossed my bag out before running for the stairs.
"Avery no!" Carter screamed. "It's a trap!"
"I have to make sure she's ok!" I yelled behind me.
When I reached the bottom, the heat was intense. The fire was creeping into the kitchen from the sitting room. The fireplace was completely engulfed, as if being fueled by gasoline. Flames licked the ceiling and all the furniture in the room was already melted and burning. I coughed again and searched the rest of the house. Standing in the living room was Sebastian. He looked cool as a cucumber. "Hello, beautiful." He purred. Carter found his way to me and pushed me behind him.
"Sebastian." He growled.
"Nephew." Sebastian barely gave him a glance before fixing his eyes back on me.
"Where is my mother?" I went to lunge at him, but Carter made sure I couldn't get from behind him.
"Oh she's fine...for now." He laughed.
"What did you do to her?" Carter barked.
Sebastian looked at his hand and opened it to reveal a ball of fire before looking back at us with red-orange eyes. This wasn't like the white-golden light Carter had me practicing yesterday, this one was a bright orange ball of flame, with a molten yellow center. "Since no one has taught you how to speak to your elders, I suppose it is up to me to discipline you."
With that, Sebastian threw the flames from his hand. Carter pushed me out of the way, I could feel the heat sear the back of my neck as I landed onto the floor. I turned just in time to see Carter jump back and the ball change course, flying upward and instantly igniting a beam that split the living room from the kitchen. "No!" I screamed, throwing me into a coughing fit.
The house groaned as the flames ate away at the wood. The beam fell to the floor with a crash, making the house shudder and lighting the antique carpets.
