"Hey dad," I said. "How are you?"

My only reply was the sound of the respiratory and heart monitor. It had only been a month and a half since he had gotten into the accident. December had come bounding in and Carter and I decided to cash in our credits and graduate early. We took our final exams and now all that was left was to wait to cross the stage for the official graduation in June. I visited him at least onve a week. I had started coming along with Carter, not that I hadn't before, but now it was my own family.

I sat next to him for almost an hour before Carter popped his head in.

"Avery?"

"Yeah?" The tiredness audible in my voice.

"Uh...can we talk?" He looked at my dads motionless figure. "Out here?"

I said goodbye to my dad, though I knew he'd never answer.

I shut the door on the way out.

Carter held out his hands and I slipped mine into them. He smiled at me a little.

"So...babe."

It was my turn to smle. "Yeah?"

His icy blue eyes became puppy dog eyes and I melted.

"I want to tell my mom."

my smile dropped a little.

"Are you sure?"

"Definitely."

"I mean..." I swallowed. "If you really want to."

"I-if you're ready" I added quickly

"I don't want to put you in an awkward position."

"No! I'm alright with it as long as you're one hundred percent sure you want to."

"I am." He assured me.

"Then lets do it." I smiled and we walked hand in hand.

Carters mom was nothing more than pale skin stretched over a skeleton. Her once sunken eyes now bulged out of her head slightly. They were the same shocking blue as Carters.

She smiled when we came in. I stopped in the doorway. My heart was pounding. Coming out to an adult.

"Mom." Carter whispered as he sat and grabbed her hands. "You remember Avery right?"

"Yes." She rasped and smiled at me.

Carter turned to me, smiled and held out his hand. I slowly walked over and slipped my hand into his.

"He's so amazing mom." He whispered. "He makes me laugh when I want to cry, smile when I think I can't anymore."

Carter swallowed and his eyes shone.

"When I cried late at night while he was asleep and he heard, he held me till I fell asleep. I-I think I'm in love with him mom. No, I know I am. We've been together since October. I just...I wanted you to know." Carter started to cry and I squeezed his hand.

Mrs. Anderson's smile faded.

"Why are you crying baby?" She wiped his face.

"Because" He sniffled "I don't want you to hate me."

She gently brought him down to her. "I don't hate you, I'm so proud of you." She tucked some of his hair behind his ear and kissed the top of his head. "You're so brave, and you too, Avery."  She held out a skeleton hand. I gently placed my hand in hers.

"Carter, give Avery and me a moment?"

"Yeah." he stood and kissed her cheek. He walked towards me and hugged me. Carter maneuvered his head to kiss me, thought better of it, but decided to do it anyway. Then he left.

"You hurt my boy and I will come back to haunt your ass." She laughed.

I smiled until her laugher turned to violent coughing that lasted a full two minutes.

"Pour me some water, will you?"

I poured the water into a plastic cup and handed it to her.

"Thank you." She whispered.

"No problem." I said and sat in the chair next to the bed.

She took another sip of her water. "Thank you." She said, not for the water this time.

"For what?"

"Looking after my son. Making him happy."

"Well, he makes me happy too."

"I know, but I mean..." She sighed. "Listen I wont be here by the time Christmas rolls around. And if I am, it won't be long after."

"Don't say that" I whispered.

"It's only true. I've come to terms with it. All that left is to wait."

She had another coughing fit.

"Anyway. Thank you for keeping that light in him through all this. It means a lo to me. And please, please take good care of him when I'm gone."

"Of course I will, I promise."

She gave me a watery smile and hugged me.

Carter and I sat In silence as I drove us home. He silently sneaked his arm around mine and grabbed my hand. It took us thirty minutes to get into town.

There was a flash of black against the white of the snow as we passed the park. I could have sworn it was a person in a black cloak, but I had only gotten a glimpse.

Carter had seen it and let out a shriek of fear. He slid down the seat until he couldn't see out the window anymore.

My eyebrows automatically knitted themselves together. I sped up a bit so I could get us home faster.

I got us there in five minutes, maybe less.

I almost hit the garage door pulling into the driveway. Thank god my mother had left for work already, she would have killed me for being so reckless.

"What's wrong, what happened?" I had gotten out and was kneeling next to him. I ran my fingers through his hair and I coaxed him out of the car and into the house. I led Carter into the sitting room where the fireplace was. He was pale and shaking I got him to sit on the couch, covered him in a blanket before I lit a fire and walked toward the kitchen to put on some tea. He grabbed my arm to stop me before I passed him.

"Please don't leave me." He looked up at me. His once vibrant eyes were now a dead and flat blue.

"I'll be right back, I promise."

"No!" He protested.

"Carter..." I squatted down with his face between my hands. "I will never, ever, leave you."

He nodded gently and I went to make the tea.

"HIs name is Sebastian." Carter said as I handed him his mug and sat next to him.

"Who is?" I asked slightly confused.

"The man who was standing by the park."

I thought I had been imagining things. "Why did you get so scared?"

"Avery I haven't really told you the complete story."

"Wh-what do you mean?"

Carter paled a little again and his eyes got watery.

"Sebastian is my uncle." He let out a shaky breath before continuing. "My dad was his older brother and he was also the head of what is known as the Council of Magic. I guess you could almost think of them as the Illuminati.

Authors note: No, I don't believe in the Illuminati. Just saying lol. but yeah, This chapter was a bit short, I'm sorrryyyy.
