Prologue

The tides are pulled and pushed, high and low. They never can find comfort, always changing. They run from the unknown open ocean and seek haven on the sands of the beaches. Then, they run back into the sea and away from the blistering sun, blinding the Earth with its light. One danger is escaped, only to be followed by another.

Fear can kill. So can trust. There is no middle ground. One can only be pushed and pulled between the two. The motion, like the tides, continues forever.

Or until the fear is overcome, and something special comes along.

"Miss Rogers," the woman said to me, shuffling awkwardly at my doorstep.

"Yes?" I asked, realizing how tired I must've looked. But I didn't care. I had just lost my grandfather, so this woman's opinion was no concern of mine.

My grandfather. Samuel Rogers. My father was never around so my mother's father helped raise me. He was always there. Now, a month without him seemed lonely.

"I have your inheritance from your grandfather, Mr. Samuel Rogers," she spoke. "It's a boat, and um, twenty-one million dollars."

My eyes grew wide. I looked past her at the beach just a block away from my front door. No one else was with her. No one was going to jump out and tell me this was a prank.

"Are you kidding?"

"There's only one condition. He wrote it in his will and it's quite odd," the woman spoke, looking down at either my bare feet or her black heels.

"What is it?" I asked.

"You must call this number, and tell the man who answers that he has won the wager. I believe your grandfather was betting another man who would die first. If the man you are calling is dead, then your grandfather has won."

"Well that's an odd request. Who am I asking for?" I said, snatching the piece of paper out of her hand.

"Mr. Sanduvol," the woman said.

I peered at the paper, suddenly feeling sick to my stomach. I hoped this guy was dead so my grandfather could rest peacefully. I felt awful for wishing death upon another person, but my grandfather was honorable, so I would fulfill his conditions.

I just didn't know how much trouble it'd get me in.

Author's Note: Please Read!

Hello! I'm very very excited for this story. It's my first story I'm going to complete, although it may be released a little late because of some timing issues.

I'd like to start off by saying thank you to everyone who reads this! I tell myself that I post stories for my own entertainment but really I enjoy feedback! So please, comment and tell me what you think!

I also would like to say that updates will be every two weeks starting on the first of January 2017. I know that's slow, but I lead a busy life. Writing is my passion and I just want to bring happiness to the lives of others!

I do edit my own work very thoroughly, which is why the update times are so spread out. I'm hoping the entire story will be completed by summer of 2017. At that point, I will either decide it's good, or I will revise and edit it. If I decide to continue to edit it after it's completed, I would expect a final copy by August of 2017.

This is just the timeline of the story. I really hope this one hits it off. I enjoy the characters a lot and I hope you love them just as much as I do!

Thank you so much!
