As Nick and I stood in my kitchen deciding what to eat, my doorbell rang.
"Do you usually have visitors at..." Nick started, pausing to look at the clock on my stove, "seven thirty at night?"
I shook my head, cautiously glancing towards the door. Nick moved before I could even blink. I was shoved behind him as he marched to the door. Before I could tell him to stop, he swung the door open. I almost screamed, waiting for him to be shot full of bullets or tackled to the floor.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I heard a familiar voice ask. I was at the door in a second.
"I could ask the same of you," Nick scowled.
It looked like Daniel was about to pounce when I appeared.
"Samantha, hey what happened? I thought we had a date last night? May said you had run off somewhere. I saw you at the boat yesterday morning," Daniel said, sounding hurt. My heart pinched as I thought about how I had ditched him.
I didn't even think about it, I had just been so busy with everything else.
"Date?" Nick questioned, turning an accusing gaze on me.
"Yes, a date. What's so wrong with that? I'm not allowed to date?" I asked, placing my hands on my hips. Nick was giving me a stern look of disappointment.
"Well how do I know-" he stopped, glancing at Daniel who stood there dumbfounded as I argued with a man I had met just a few days ago like we were an old married couple.
"What is going on?" Daniel finally got his question out.
"Nick, go inside. I'm going to talk to Daniel privately," I ordered, stepping out onto the doorstep. Even at night, the California air was refreshing.
I shut the door behind me before the man in the suit could argue. Then, Daniel burst with questions.
"What is that guy doing here? Who is he? Are you okay? Why did you storm out like May said? Why did you skip our date?"
I waited for him to be done before answering. I told him about my argument with May and he understood why I skipped out on the date. I spent two nights in the boat and then was busy all day today. I let him know I sent May away to live with my mother. After that, I informed him on why Nick was here. I decided to tell him that Nick was helping me budget my money I had gotten in exchange for a place to stay.
"But that guy is made of money. Why does he need a place?" Daniel asked.
"His father kicked him out of Sanduvol Co. He just needs a month or two to make it up to his father," I explained.
This is lying.
I told my conscious to shut it as Daniel and I continued to catch up. We were talking normally when he suddenly grasped my hand. My gaze shot down to the connection before back up to his face. He searched my eyes before leaning in.
Oh my god, Daniel is going to kiss me.
I closed my eyes, leaning towards him.
He's getting too close.
My head shot backwards and my body followed. I almost slammed into my door before stopping myself.
"Geez Samantha, are you okay?" Daniel asked, reaching out to me.
"Um, yeah. I have to um, go inside. I'll see you tomorrow at work," I hurried out, not waiting for a reply as I scurried into the house and locked the door behind me.
I was expecting Nick to be standing by the window, laughing at my little episode. However he was no where to be found. I checked the kitchen and the living room, but no Nick. I decided to check upstairs. His room was vacant, as was the bathroom. Only one more place he could be.
