"So you are interested in her," I heard a voice say.
"Not so. We are going to a safe place, but I can't endanger the person housing us by letting them know about the attack," Nick's voice filled the room.
But the room wasn't a room at all.
I lifted my head from Daniel's lap, my eyes felt crusted and dry from tears I didn't know I had cried.
"You're awake," Daniel sighed out, his voice more of a breath than anything else. The seatbelt around my waist had been stretched in an uncomfortable fashion, so I straightened out slowly.
"We're still driving?" I asked, squinting at the afternoon sun. At the moment, we were stuck in traffic. I caught glimpse of a sign a couple miles ahead.
'Sacramento International Airport'
"Where are we going?" I asked another question without receiving an answer to the first one.
Nick was silent, stiff. His eyes were focused on the road, and his body was unmoving. Daniel looked between Nick and I, waiting for an answer as well.
"Nick!" I growled, surprising even myself with my intensity.
"Miss Rogers! Do not speak to me in that way. I am taking you and your lover somewhere safe. No arguments. I understand this may be hard for you but this is necessary," he snapped.
"Well, where are we going?" Daniel questioned.
"And Daniel is not my lover! We're just friends," I argued, catching sight of the hurt pass through Daniel's eyes.
"We are going to see my mother, in England," Nick sighed, finally showing some form of emotion.
I just couldn't tell what emotion.
It looked like a mix of anger and fear. Without thinking, I placed my hand on his shoulder and ran my hand back and forth. His suit jacket was stiff under my palm.
As soon as I pressed down harder, Nick flinched away from me and shouted, "Stop!"
I jumped away, back into Daniel's arms. Daniel circled me in his hold as I calmed myself down.
Nick's jaw ticked as he looked at us in the rear view mirror, but he stayed silent.
"It's okay," Daniel whispered into my hair.
"I'm fine," I growled at him, moving to the opposite side of the back seat.
What the hell had I gotten myself into?
--
The plane landed in England hours later. I wasn't keeping track of time, even though I was impatient. As soon as we landed, I dialed May's phone number.
Nick snatched the phone out of my hand and ended the call.
"Calling her will only put her in more danger. Get in," he ordered, opening the door to the taxi cab for me. Daniel had already climbed in the other side, leaving the front seat for Nick.
I decided not to question him, seeing his tense attitude. I wondered why he was so agitated.
The cab drive was long. I knew I smelt horrible. Daniel had only gotten a small chance to clean the blood off of him in the airport bathroom.
We had learned it was Conner's blood.
There was no way of knowing if he was alive.
Once the cab stopped, I had to blink a few times to test my vision.
