"So," Nick began. We were sitting in a hospital room together. Not just any hospital room, my hospital room. I had broken five ribs, one almost puncturing my lung. My wounds from my escape a couple days ago had gotten worse during all of the excitement, so those had been treated as well. Nick barely suffered a concussion. "Would you like me to inform your mother and sister of the events that transpired?"
"Do you think that's a good idea?" I asked, studying Nick's face.
"Yes, I believe your mother will be glad to know that bastard is dead. And your sister will want to return home."
"My house is ready?" I smiled.
"Of course, who do you think I am? I can get anything done," he bragged, a smirk lighting up his features.
"Conner did it all, didn't he?" I knew Nick hadn't done much to my house. He had been too busy here with me. Laying in a bed for four days sucked less when someone else was there to keep you company. My mother and sister had heard the news yesterday and arrived last night.
However, they were told I was in a car accident, not almost killed by my father in a helicopter crash. My mother broke into tears upon seeing my broken form. Nick, of course, offered to pay the hospital bill. My mother refused but Nick told her it had already been done.
"You know, I think you owe me a boat now," Nick chuckled, changing the subject so he wouldn't have to answer my question about Conner.
Instead of joking back, I felt my heart pang in my chest and tears gather in my eyes. This was the end of our adventure together. Why else would we need to socialize? Nick was from a different world than I.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he questioned. "Do you need me to get a doctor?" Nick shot out of his chair, ready to shut down the entire hospital in order to meet my needs if he had to.
"No, no, it's not that," I spoke quickly, grasping onto his suit jacket sleeve. I pulled him back into the uncomfortable hospital chair. His eyes were still filled with concern. Nick had grown from an emotionless jerk to a caring individual before my very eyes and I hadn't even stopped to notice it.
"Well?" he wondered, urging me to tell him what was bothering me.
"Is this where we part ways?" I whispered, my voice showing my uneasiness. Nick suddenly grew tense, and he swallowed uncomfortably.
It was silent for what felt like an eternity, before Nick promptly stood up and stormed out of the room. So I had been right. He didn't want anything to do with me. He was only sticking around now to make sure he got his payment, but I had pushed him too far and now he didn't even want my boat.
"Idiot," I whispered to myself. I was alone now, and it felt worse than falling 18,000 feet into the ocean.
--
A week later, I had been released from the hospital. Over the course of the week I had told my mother and sister everything, even my feelings for Nick. My sister was furious at first, but understood after she had some time to adjust.
"May, grab Samantha's bags for me. I'm going to help her up into bed," my mother called to May who was still getting out of the car.
"Mom, I'm fine. Let me sit downstairs."
"Two days of rest in bed. Doctor's orders," my mother shook her head at me. I decided to comply, considering I had already put them through so much as it is. "And don't try to sneak downstairs, missy. We don't need you breaking any more ribs."
"Yes, Mother," I groaned. This would be a long weekend.
After a few hours of being asked, "Are you alright?" around one million times, my mother and sister finally left me alone. I had learned from May that Daniel was currently in court for his little shoot out that ended with me getting shot twice. The police would be by in a few days to collect my statement.
