"So you have to call this Sandals guy and then the bank account will be opened?" May asked me.

I stared at her, chomping down cereal and scanning a newspaper. At only fifteen she had gotten accepted into the same college as me.

"So I'm twenty-three now?" she had asked me the day she got enrolled. That was last year. I was currently thanking the sun and moon that summer had started.

"Yeah, I just need to call and see if he's dead. I don't think he needs to be dead for it to work though," I said, focusing my attention back on my cell phone that was sitting on the counter in front of me.

"Then why haven't you done it?" she asked.

I shrugged my shoulders, reaching for my phone. I punched in the number and hovered my thumb over the call button.

"I just can't," I sighed, deleting the numbers and standing up. I was almost twenty-four years old and I couldn't call some dumb number.

"Well I'll see you after work," May spoke through Honey Nut Cheerios.

Nodding, I stood from my seat at our kitchen table. The kitchen was blue and white, much to my dismay. My mother had insisted on it, since May and I would be living so close to the beach.

"Bye May," I said, opening the front door.

"Bye Sam," she smirked, and I glared at her nickname. To answer her, I slammed the door closed, beginning my trek to work.

My flip flops clapped against my feet. The ocean air was salty and fresh smelling. I could hear the laughter from only one block away.

"Hey Daniel," I greeted my coworker.

"Guess what," he said, smiling at me. His blue eyes lit up and I smiled back.

"We're on a tower together today?" I asked.

He nodded and I laughed. Daniel and I were the only two lifeguards that got along. Everyone else was stuck up and got the job for appearances.

I grabbed everything I needed and headed down to the station assigned to us. The lifeguard towers were about four feet off the ground, and painted bright blue. They had a fence around them so teenagers weren't able to make out underneath them at night.

Each tower had a small porch, and then an indoor room that held all life saving devices and chairs for us to lounge in.

Right now, the beach was busy, so Daniel and I sat outside on the porch.

"Hey Samantha! How's May?" a young woman asked me. I recognized her as one of my sister's old teachers in high school.

"She's doing fine, Mrs. Baker. She's really taking to the college lifestyle," I laughed.

"You really get to know people as a lifeguard, don't you?" Daniel said, putting his hands behind his head. His arms flexed and I knew girls were looking over. Why wouldn't they? Daniel was an attractive guy. He had blond hair and ocean blue eyes. It's like he was built for the beach.

"Yes you do," I laughed.

"Well I'm just glad to finally be getting some sun. I'm telling you, Samantha, people think Cali is all sun and ocean. During the winter, you get frost bite if you even look at the waves," he laughed.

I shook my head, grinning at him. He gazed out across the sand and smiled.

"What?" I asked, finding my own smile growing.
