A Father's Heart

A small shoe in a puddle of blood;

His tiny finger prints scarred the mud.

The one I held dear to my heart,

Now gone; his body ripped apart.

Dead my one and only son,

I wish there could've been something I have done.

Helpless I lay...

As night turned into day...

Wanting to hear one last time,

That one title I never wanted to be mine.

I desperately wish to hear,

Your soft whisper in my ear:

"Good night, daddy." as you kiss me on my cheek

Every night of the week.

From your annoying whine, to your contagious laugh;

Without you I'm only half.

So tell me what I must do,

To make my simple wish come true.

I want you back with me never to leave my side,

So together one day we can watch the tide.

Now, fourteen years later you've answered my prayer;

Those precious moments we can now share.

But some day I must go,

To the one place we both know--

Now it is my turn to say goodnight.

But do not worry and do not fright!

Although your feelings for me twist and bend,

Goodbye my son. I'll love you to the very end.
