Late at night, when I came home from John's, I threw my shoes from my feet and collapsed on my couch. It was a very nice day today, but I didn't think that John would be able to make it so stressful. After laying for about an hour, I couldn't sleep. Thoughts were constantly running through my head, either they were possible or not. I decided to pick up the phone, hoping he won't mind if I call him.
The ringing noise in the background made me nervous. What was I supposed to say? How was I supposed to say it? Will he forgive me after all I've done?
A few seconds passed, and the ringing stopped.
"Hello?" I sighed in relief.
"George? It's me, Anna. I hope you don't mind me calling."
"Anna! So nice to hear from you again. It's been a while."
"Yeah, I missed you, Geo. Could I ask you a favor?"
"Sure, love. Anything. Tell me what's on your mind."
"Could I sleep at your place tonight? It's really lonely here." I felt so stupid saying that, even if George was my best friend.
"Oh Anna, you know you don't even have to ask. The door's always open for a girl like you." I could feel my cheeks start to burn. He never failed at making me smile.
"Okay. Thank you so much, George. I'll be there in no time."
"Okay, Anna. See you soon, then."
"Bye, George."
The line went silent. I hurriedly got up from the couch and threw my clothes Into my bag that I might need at George's house.
I looked through my wardrobe and found a picture. It seemed like it was taken a while back. George and I were there. Smiling, our arms around each other. We looked so different than we do now.
I turn it over and on it written, "To Anna. Being the best friend I could have ever had.
x George"
I'm pretty sure that made my smile spread across my whole face.
Without thinking, I put it in my bag, making sure I'll show it to George.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I walk through the breezy, dark night, finally approaching George's house. I carefully and quietly walked up the driveway, hoping I won't wake the whole neighborhood. Without even being able to knock on the door, it opens.
A tall, slim man, standing behind it. Rushing to me, he picked up my bag. "George!" I happily threw my arms around him, "I missed you so much!" He chuckled, putting his arms around me. "Anna," He gave me a kiss on the head, "I missed ye, too. A lot, ye know. I thought ye already forgot about me." I gave him a look, easy enough to be read. "Forget? Why in the world would I forget about my best bud?" "I don't know, I just thought it..." There was silence in between the two of us for a while. It wasn't awkward, it was more like comfortable. We were happy to finally see each other after a long while.
Smiling at each other, George broke the silence, "Well, I won't let ye just stand here out in the cold. Lemme take yer bags and let's go inside." I giggled and patted his shoulder. "Oh Geo. You've always been such a gentleman." "I'm pretty aware of that." He joked.I was extremely tired that night. George's parents were out of town visiting family of some sort, so we had the house to ourselves. Well, George did.
He handed me a blanket and started to light a fire. "Here, make yourself at home. If you need anything, just tell me and I'll be at your service." He said, bowing to me like a waiter. "I'm fine, George. Just come and sit with me over here. I don't want you babying me just because I'm a girl." He chuckled, slowly sitting next to me once he finished working with the fire. "Okay, I won't baby ye." He put his arm around my shoulder, making the both of us more comfortable. "I really missed ye, Anna. You were me best friend, we never left each other. And then, you got a flat of yer's and went to a different school, so we kinda lost in touch." I caressed his cheek. "George, you know I would never forget you. And even if we did lose contact, I would've always found you, just like I did now." He sighed, knowing that he failed at our conversation.
"Okay. So...what do ya wanna do now?" I sat and thought, what we could do that wouldn't bore us. "Hmm.. I don't know. What would you do?" "Let's see... Do you wanna play truth or dare? I could phone Paul over, too. I mean, only if you'd like to." "Okay, we could do that. But I don't know if we should bother Paul at this time of night." He thought for a moment before answering, "Nah, I don't think he'll mind too much."
With that, he picked up the phone and rang to Paul's house.
"Hello?" A groggy and sleepy voice answered. "Paul? It's me George. Sorry to bother you at this time." "What the bloody hell, George?! I'm tryna sleep 'ere and you just have to ring the phone!" George sighed, knowing that he made a mistake. "Okay, sorry Paul. I just thought that you might wanna play a game of truth or dare with me and Anna. But it's okay, I understand. Good night, Paul." The the other end of the phone was silent for a moment, but soon spoke up. "Wait, George. Did you say that Anna was over at yours?" George was quite shocked that Paul just realized that I was here. "Yeah. I just told ye that, mate. I can tell you slept on the wrong end of the bed." "Oh, sod off, George! Don't do anything before I get there!" "Okay, okay, Paul. Just get a move on! I don't wanna wait another morning for ye!" After that, the line went dead.
"So?.." I asked, "what did he say?" George shrugged. "He said he'll be here in no time. Until then, what'd ya wanna drink?" I thought for a while, before I decided what I would like. "Um.. I think that beer would be fine." George wiggled his eyebrows, and before he could make it to the kitchen, the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it. You just go and get the drinks for the three of us." I suggested. George obeyed, and I went to open the door.
"Good evening, Anna. Nice to meet you again." Paul took my hand and kissed it. I blushed deep red and smiled. "Good evening, Paul. Come on in. George is in the kitchen getting our drinks ready before we play." "Oh, okay. That sounds nice. How are you, Anna? Anything new?" I thought about what Paul said. Do I have anything new?
"Um.. No, not really. It's still the way it's always been. What about you?" "Eh, I could say the same. The lads and I are getting ready to go to Hamburg in August. I heard you're coming with us as well?" "Yeah. I can't thank you enough for doing that for me. I wish there was some way to repay you." "No, there's no need to repay us. Just thank George for coming up with the idea."
Just after our conversation with Paul, George came into the room with our drinks. "So, are we ready to play?" "Yep. Let's play." Paul said, rubbing his hands together in excitement.
