Weeks had gone by, and mom had been getting weaker and weaker. Last week when we went out to see the ferry boats in New York, she had collapsed and started to have another seizure.

Everyday mom had been throwing in more and more. Her eyes held the wary emotion in them every time she looked at me. I was trying to stay strong and keep her happy, which sometimes worked, but not all the time.

Last week was moms last week outside of the hospital. The seizures had become more frequent and she had been throwing up more and more.

Now, she was here at the hospital in New Jersey.

"Tomorrow's your birthday, your going to be sixteen," Mom spoke, as I turned my full attention to her. She gave me a soft smile as she squeezed my hand. I looked to the floor, avoiding eye contact with her.

"What are you going to wish for?" My mom asked me. I didn't have to think about it, I knew what I wanted to wish for. Other kids my age would wish for a boyfriend or maybe money, or cars and other stuff.

But that wasn't the case with me.

"I can't tell you mom, or else it won't be a secret." I said to her, as she let out a small laugh. Everything around me felt as if it was gloomy, nothing was alive or happy to me. Every time I saw my mom in pain, I tried my hardest not to cry. Mom let out some cough and I gave her a worried look.

"It's alright. Can you pass me the water?" She asked as I grabbed a cup and filled it up with the jug of water. I handed to her and she drank it. I noticed her hand trembling as she held it. She gave me the cup to out back on the small table near her bed.

"That's better-" She said stopping when Shay walked into the door. He gave us a sympathetic stare and I turned my attention to mom.

"Reese, I have to talk to Shay for a bit. Can you wait outside in the waiting room?" Mom asked me as I nodded my head. I kissed her forehead as I left the room.

/Shay/

Reese left the room as I diverted my attention back to Marie.

"Don't look at me like I'm some kind of wounded animal. I know- I know I'm going to die soon, but I don't want pity. I want something else though," She said as I walked over to her bedside.

"What is it?" I questioned.

"Take care of her; she will need someone. Teach her right from wrong, teach her the good things. Make sure she learns to drive a stick shift car before she learns how to drive an automatic. Make sure she remembers me-"

"Marie, she won't forget you. Ever, I promise."

"I know. After I d-die, make sure she doesn't go that dark. Keep her spirit and personality alive for me. Raise her as if she was one of your own. She needs to have a family after I'm gone. Raise her with your wife, uh-"

"Colette," I spoke, finishing the sentence. She nodded her head as some tears fell down her cheeks. I felt some pool in my eyes. I wasn't sensitive, but this was different.

"Don't let her do drugs, or smoke. Be there for her when she graduates, and walk her down that aisle when she gets married." Marie said, as I sat down next to her. She was weaker than when I last saw her, her eyes were paler.

"I will. I'll raise her as if I had been there for her all those years." I replied.

Marie started to cough. I pressed the button for the nurses and they came rushing in with a bucket. They held it in front of her face as she threw up blood. It came seeping down her mouth as she chocked more of it out.

From the door, I saw Reese standing there horrified. Marie noticed her and began to panic. I went over to Reese and brought her out of the room.

"Is mom okay?" Reese frantically asked me.

But I didn't know how to respond to that; she wouldn't be alright. Reese knew the answer as she looked down at the floor. Slowly, I held her in a hug.

I couldn't imagine the pain of my mom dying.

But Marie was going to die.
