Meri looked up at her sister, Nicki. Her mouth was moving; she was talking. But Meri couldn't hear her. "Meri..." she started. "Are you listening to me?" Meri just stared at her. "Meredith, this is hard for all of us. You can't just stare at me. Talk," Nicki snapped.
Meri looked down at her lap and tried to fight her tears. Her mum was dead. She was never going to see her again. "Meredith," her other sister Sam snapped. "It'll be okay," she tried.
Jim walked into the room. He had just finished crying and he was determined not to do it again. His little sister was only twelve – he had to stay strong for her.
"For goodness sakes, Meredith," Nicki exclaimed. "Just say something!"
Meri fiddled with the ladder in her tights and kept quiet. "Nicki... I don't think..." Jim started.
"She needs to speak Jim. So we can help her," Sam interrupted. Nicki nodded in agreement.
"This is difficult for us all," she said. Meri felt a tear trickle down her cheek and wiped it with her sleeve. Then she sniffed and Jim sat next to her.
"Come here, Meri," he whispered. He pulled her into a hug and this made her cry more. "Hey... you're okay. I've got you,"
"Jim... don't," Nicki tried.
"Don't what? Comfort our sister? Look at her Nick! She's crying her eyes out," Jim shouted. Meri's sobs became louder at his raised voice.
"Meri knew this was going to happen. It was inevitable," Sam said in reply.
"That doesn't make it any easier," Jim argued. "Mum is gone and yes, it was inevitable. But it doesn't make it any easier,"
