Roxas chuckled merrily as he continued baking. He didn’t know why but the kitchen was his home, he felt a connection with the room. He gave the batter one last big stir and prepped the oven.
His mom had taught him how to cook even when he was very young; he heard his aunt mention once that he was born preparing eggs! At the age of five he could prepare escargots and other appetizers fit for a presidential party. Ten, he could roast a pig and serve it so it tasted like chicken. Now he was fifteen and he could bake and cook dishes that would make a master chef straight from Paris swoon.
He poured the cake batter into its glass coffin and inserted it into the scorching oven.
“Roxas!” he heard his mother calling from upstairs.
The boy stared worriedly at his cake before briskly walking out of the kitchen he adored so much.
“Hey, Roxas!” His brother called out to him. The older blonde was sitting on their snow-white couch, his head in his hands. He looked exhausted, like he had just experienced the whole world since he and his mom had left a few hours ago, “Rox…be careful with mom, alright? She’s really tired; we just…never mind. Go ahead.”
Roxas nodded, “Alright. Oh hey could you let me know when the buzzer rings?” He gestured to the baking delicacy.
Cloud smiled and nodded, “Alright, kid.” He got up and made his way to the kitchen, ruffling the shorter one’s hair a bit along the way.
He walked up the beautiful oak staircase carefully with his socked feet; not a creak out of the set. He paused to admire a gigantic painting of an old man and his wife that were his grandparents before they passed away a year ago. It’s frame was gilded in gold and it gave a royal effect to their already rich lifestyle. He smiled at it, leaning on a small side-table.
He felt a piece of paper under his palm. He studied the crumpled piece carefully:
Aqua Hikari
(831)-555 1010
' Roxas frowned, he knew that was Ven’s last name. Why did his mother have this? He shrugged it off and turned the golden door knob to enter.
“Hey mom…you alright?” he greeted.
She turned in his direction, “Roxas… *cough* could you get me my medicine, please?”
The boy nodded and opened a cabinet on the other side of the room. He gazed at the clock above her head before picking three orange containers and taking out a pill from each. “So where did you and Cloud go?” He asked calmly as he poured some wine out of a silver pitcher.
She nodded in gratitude as he hander her the cup and medicine, “Thank you…umm we went to go run some errands. Oh and my friend loved your cake!” Roxas noted the venom of the word “friend” but chuckled gratefully anyway.
He noticed she was still wearing her green formal dress, and frowned at two dirt stains each at her knees, “Mom what happened?”
“Oh I tripped, it’s alright I’m fine!” she argued.
Roxas took out a nightgown from her dresser and handed it to her, trading with the silver cup. He ran downstairs and threw it in the sink before going back up, she was already in her sleepwear. Her dress was a crumpled mess on the bed.
“Mom, you know the doctor said you should be in bed resting.” He felt like the role was reversed, he was scolding his mother.
“Roxas, you and *cough* Dr. Mouse worry too much. I have a heart problem not a leg problem. I can still walk!”
Roxas flinched at the mention of her sickness, “I know…but I’m just a bit scared for you.”
She smiled warmly, something he loved that she still did, “Roxas…when I go-“
“If!” He weakly corrected, he was getting chocked up.
She gestured for her son to come to her, “When I go…” He laid down next to her mother, “You’ll still have Cloud, and all your friends…plus someone else.”
“How do you know about Sora?”
She chuckled, “No, no not Sora. But it is someone that will be very special to you.”
“Who is it?” He asked.
“It’s a surprise, dear. But it’ll be an amazing one indeed.”
