"Clarie", Ciel whispered." Just don't think about Mary now, okay? I know that you trusted her but then, life's like that, Clarie, it's never fair. Just look at us, how life has treated us, but then we can do it. Don't let your thoughts control you."
I felt even worse then, poor Ciel. He doesn't know about his father either. "Ciel.." I said in a shaky voice when the horses neighed loudly and the carriage came to an abrupt stop.I was flung against Ciel and both of us fell down , me on top of him.
"What the bloody hell was that?" Ciel groaned." The carriage stopped ". I exclaimed . " Then open the hole now, put your sword at the edge and give the handle to me!" Ciel said.
It was at times like these that I hated my disability. Because of it, I never had the strength to so even some mundane tasks. But then Ciel also had to depend a lot on people to even walk but then he never showed it , being vulnerable only in front of Dorian and me." Don't think of Dorian, don't think of Dorian.... " My mind chanted.
Suddenly, there was a pop sound and the lid came off. The road was really rugged from what I could see and then I could hear some sounds from outside." What is that?" Ciel asked. "I don't know." I said and led him down. He jumped out and I followed. Then I put his hands at the edge of the hole so that he could put the wood piece back.
There was some sort of a scuffle going on outside as I could hear the clanging of swords. Then everything became clear. I remembered an evening, hiding from my mother's wrath in my father's study and the hushed conversation between Doraian and my father about them, the bandits! Either out situation got better or a whole lot worse. "Just don't ask questions, hold my hand and run in the direction I pull you in" I said and grabbed Ciel's hand. It was warm and callused from all the swordplay he did but it was a familiar comfort. I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. "No! I thought, Ciel only sees you like a brother, just clear your head and focus on escaping." I told myself. Now was not the time to act like a lovesick fool. I tensed and crawled to the end and looked out.
There was indeed a scuffle going on. Two hooded men were holding an unconscious man, most probably the driver and two others were fighting with Mary. She looked determined and noble and I still couldn't wrap my head around her betrayal. But that was the truth and I couldn't ignore it. "Get ready" I whispered to Ciel and ran into the thick foliage which covered both sides of the path , dragging Ciel silently behind me.
We ran right into the dark forest.. The trees stretched high and a variety of animal noises could be heard. But then, who pays attention to such things when you are running for your life. I dodged the trees as I ran, pulling Ciel as hard as I could. My left hand grasped his arm tightly and my right sleeve fluttered in the wind. Branches hit my body and twigs stuck in my hair. One time I almost tripped over a stone and fell but Ciel steadied me. The sounds of the fight became fainter and gradually faded away. We reached a clearing in the woods and I flopped down unceremoniously on the ground, panting heavily.
He took a few deep breaths and burst out" what happened there? I heard the scuffle and someone was continuously shouting ' Where is she?' "
Someone shouting? The boy must have better ears than me. His auditory senses were far more developed to compensate for his lack of sight.
" Dorian" , I said, my mouth dry. "Once I overheard my father and him speaking about a bandit problem in the west, especially in the forested road leading to Saleria city. The carriage was attacked by them. They were strange men with dark hoods covering their faces."
"Bandits huh?" Said Ciel."And now we're in the forest. Do you, by any chance know the way out?"
"Well " I said, getting irritated, even though I knew that Ciel didn't mean it in a bad sense. The days events were finally catching up with me." When one tries to escape with one's life, a person doesn't think of anything other than running away."
" Cool down Clare, I was just joking. I know you did your best." Ciel said and a shadow passed over his face. "It's my fault. You had to have an extra burden with you. I should apologize to you but I don't deserve it because I'm really useless." He said.
I was shocked. Ciel always had that confident exterior around him. I always thought that he was strong, unbreakable. Even though he is blind, he was quite handsome and tall. There was something about him that was inspiring. He was my childhood role model who helped me develop courage. Now I wondered how right I was then. Everyone has their own insecurities, they just hide it better. They only show up in times of adversity. I was about to comfort him when he suddenly stiffened.
"Clarie, get ready to hide. Someone's coming" he whispered...
