So This Is Love

There. I said it, and I'm sure that I meant it. I am deeply, foolishly, madly, irrevocably in love with Chase Davenport. I know that I had a huge crush on him and his beautiful, magnificent brain when we first met, but it has become more than that. I am in love with him. I can't help it. After I said that I was in love with Chase, everybody was silent and I eventually found out that they were staring at me. I didn't care. In fact, I wanted them to know that I feel that way about Chase. Now, Leo, Adam, Bree and I, along with a dying Chase on Adam's back, rush back to the Island, where Daddy and Uncle are monitoring the mission.

As soon as Daddy and Uncle lay eyes on us, their faces turn pale. "What happened," Uncle Donny asks, worried. "What's going on," Daddy asks, setting his hand on my shoulder. I manage to speak through my sobs, "Ch-Ch-Chase! He-he-his heart stopped! He's...NOT BREATHING!" "Get him on the table," Uncle Donny commands, clear worry and panic in his voice. We set Chase on one of the long lunch tables, which is the only available tool right now. We all crowd around the table. "All right, everybody clear except Douglas," Uncle Donny commands. Everyone steps back except me. I'm too worried. Bree grasps my arm. "It'll be okay," she whispers, clearly unsure of herself. "We can't crowd him." I have no choice but to watch as Donald and Douglas stick breathing tubes in Chase's nostrils.

They start doing something that I think is some form of CPR, just not mouth to mouth. I physically can't stop sobbing. I am terrified that Chase is going to die. Bree wraps her arms around me and starts to cry. Adam and Leo join the hug and make it a group hug, also starting to cry. After what feels like an eternity, we hear a loud gasp. I look up from Bree's shoulder and break the group hug. He's breathing. Chase is breathing! I run over to him, followed by Adam, Bree, and Leo. His eyes are still closed but he is breathing. I run my fingers through his hair. "Chase," I ask, breathlessly.

His eyes flutter slowly open and he does something unexpected. He smiles at me. "Hey, princess," he says, softly. I laugh, just happy that he is alive and breathing. I press my lips firmly to his forehead. Then I bury my face in his neck and what comes out of my mouth is sort of a mix between sobbing and laughing. He strokes my hair. "It's okay," he says, catching his breath. "I'm okay. Everything's all right now." I suddenly remember Ash's explanation of Chase's permanent disability. Of how his body will no longer be able to function because of the shock. My body almost goes numb just thinking about it.

"Chase," I whimper. "C-can you move?" He slowly lifts up his left hand, but gives a cry of agony and immediately drops it. He tries this with his right hand and screams again. That is when I lose another piece of my sanity. He is disabled. My Little Genius is disabled. I'm afraid to touch him, for fear I'll hurt him, but I find myself squeezing his hand, a nervous habit that I can't seem to break. I rest my head on his chest and whisper, "Stay with me?" "Always," he replies. We hear someone whistling a tune behind us. I turn around and see Bree putting her three middle fingers to her lips and holding them up as she whistles the tune. When she is finished, she cringes, "Sorry. I know that now isn't really the best time but, May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor."
