Slade arrived right on 11am. I knew from the sound in his voice through the intercom that he was nervous and was obviously worried about how I would react to him. Things had been left unanswered last night and the morning had brought a new prospective for me.
I was going to work with the CWT and that included Slade. I knew that I had strong feelings for him but I also knew I wouldn't compromise my work with Blind Bird. I had come to the conclusion that as much as I had a physical reaction to Slade, I had to contain it and forget about it. I couldn't have both Blind Bird and Slade in my life without one of them maybe getting hurt or even killed if I was discovered. I needed to concentrate on the assignments and in the times in between I would put up the wall that I had been used to since my family had died. I knew that I had to make it work and if that included shutting down my feelings then I would do that.
I opened the door to him and immediately I could feel the buzz of electricity already starting between us. I could also see by the look on his face that he was concerned about what had happened last night.
"Are you ready to go back to the CWT?" Slade said somewhat lightly as if trying to break the tension.
"Yes, I have been looking forward to it" I replied.
"Really? I was rather hoping that you had been looking forward to seeing me as well" he joked, the nerves slightly wavering his voice as he said it.
I looked at the floor for a few seconds while I gathered my thoughts. I had to be both gentle and firm to get my feelings across.
"I am sorry about last night and the way I reacted, but I can't have a relationship with you Slade. The assignments that I do are dangerous and I am not willing to let anyone get involved with me if it could affect them"
Slade looked me in the eyes and I could see that he wanted to reach out as if he was going to reassure me that everything would be okay.
"Lacey, I don't believe that at all. You can't turn your feelings off like a switch. I know you feel the same way I do, I knew that as soon as we kissed last night. I can look after you and myself, no matter what the consequences may be. I just want you to give us a chance and no matter how long that takes, I am willing to wait".
"You would be waiting for an eternity Slade, because it just can't happen".
Slade looked at my face and I knew he could see the conflict I was having was all over it.
"However long it takes will be how long I will wait".
"I'm sorry Slade, but it is just never going to happen" I said, this time a little more forceful.
He looked at me but I could see it had not actually registered with him. He took a step to the side and gestured towards the door "Shall we go?"
The van was waiting outside and I could see Tori and Theon in the front seat waiting for us. Tori looked at me and scowled and Theon gave me a big smile then handed me a takeaway coffee.
"Thanks Theon" I said as I climbed into the seat behind him and took a sip of the delicious hot brew.
"Hope you like it Lacey. My mum owns the coffee shop a few blocks over called BB's Coffee".
"I have been there several times actually and they make the best coffee" I replied.
Theon gave me a quick proud smile before starting the van and moving it into the busy street. The CWT was a nice trip out of the city and I had been looking forward to going back and meeting the children. I also wanted to ask more about Marlena Gael's diary that supposedly had my name in it. I only hoped that Jeffrey would allow me to read it as I didn't want to ask Slade if he could get it for me.
