Visions of Slade reaching out and kissing me interrupted my dreams. He was pulling me towards the darkness and our hands would grasp each other but the force was too strong and I was left screaming his name. I woke screaming, drenched with sweat and calling for him through the darkness.
In the morning I was determined to get out of this room and to see what was in this centre. I recalled seeing the house when we arrived which didn't look big enough to hold a family of six let along hundreds of people, so it must be a disguise. The actual building was probably underground like the CWT had been.
I sat up in the bed and almost immediately my grandmother walked through the door.
"Good morning sweetheart. You look a lot better this morning. I hope your appetite is good because I have practically ordered the whole breakfast menu" she said as she walked over to me with a tray of food.
She was right. There were pancakes with bacon, toast and jams, orange juice and a bowl of fresh fruit salad. It all looked so fantastic and I found that I was starving. I started on the pancakes and before I knew it I was on to the last item which was the fruit salad. My stomach groaned at all the food I had just eaten, but I ignored it. I enjoyed every mouthful!
I looked at my Grandmother who was sitting in the chair next to me and I noticed she had a concerned look on her face.
"What is the matter Grandma?"
She looked at me and then stood up and took the tray.
"It is nothing really Lacey. I suppose I am just a bit concerned that what you might see today may be a bit too much for you. I know that Theon is so adamant that he is taking you around the centre and wants to show you everything, but some of what you will see may not be beneficial for you at this time and I worry about the harm it may do".
"I can't see what taking me around to see everyone and everything here would cause me any harm. Plus I am not the little girl that I was when the Watchers ambushed our house. I have been living by myself for a while now and have survived without any outside intervention since I left you. Whatever Theon has to show me today is probably nothing that I can't handle." I replied.
My Grandmother looked like she was about to say something else when there was a knock at the door, followed quickly by the door opening and Theon and Max standing there side by side. This was the second time that the two of them had presented themselves in my doorway in this manner and I had to try not to laugh as I saw the glee on Theon's face and what looked to be contempt in Max's face. It was obvious from where I was sitting that these two were never going to be friends.
"Are you ready?" Theon said. "Today is going to be a day you are never going to forget".
His enthusiasm was infectious and I could feel my energy levels rising as he practically bounced around the room.
"Yes I will be ready as soon as I get changed out of these clothes and into something more appropriate. Plus I need something that you can push me in as I am not sure I have the energy to go everywhere you want me to go today".
"I have the chair outside ready for you Lacey and Theon and I will give you time to get ready. Plus we are not taking you around the whole of the complex today, only to some areas that would be good for you to see" Max stated.
Theon stopped and looked at Max "We discussed this already Max, she is seeing what she needs to see and that includes Ward 5".
"Ward 5?" I said "What's in Ward 5?".
Theon looked over at Max and Max shook his head at him.
"You will see. All in good time" Theon said.
