Chapter 32 - The unseen gift

A scream escaped from my lips as I ran towards him. I lifted his head and placed it on my knee and drew his body towards mine.

Watchers came in from every entrance and I saw Tori scream and sink to her knees. Theon stood still for a few seconds and then ran and knelt beside Slade. Blood was trickling out of the wound and I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was dead.

This was my fault. Slade was dead because of me.

Tears rolled down my cheeks and a deep guttural sound came from within me as I wailed out loud.

I looked at Tori sitting on the floor, gas mask now cast to the side and she was crying. I had no compassion for her. I hated her!

She looked at me and I could see her remorse, but I didn't care.

Watchers were arguing about who shot Slade and why. The noise of their arguing surrounded me and my hands started heating up. They were becoming so hot that I was afraid they would burst into flames.

The room started to move and my vision blurred, it was unlike anything I had experienced before. I felt the power within my hands trembld and I knew that Blind Bird was also with me as I felt our connection strengthen.

"You have the power Lacey. You have a gift that no one else has and now is the time to use it".

I could feel her strength but I could also feel that hers was no match for mine. For the first time I understood what I needed to do, what I was here to do. I placed my hands directly around his body with one over the bullet wound and the other around his back, cradling him in my arms.

As my hands increased in heat I saw a blue light start from the middle of my palm and work its way up towards each finger. Soon both hands were shining with a blue light that seemed to radiate outside of them.

I closed my eyes and heard Blind Bird's voice "You have the strength to bring him back. Bring him back Lacey".

I didn't know what to say or what to do so I thought about him, about the man I loved. I saw the first time we met on the train and then again when we saved Melissa. I saw our first kiss and my reluctance to be with him. The visions swirled on and on. I saw every detail of his eyes, his hair, his face, his laughter and I saw the love we had together.

The light grew with each memory, with each feeling until it covered us in a swirling mist of the brightest blue light. I opened my eyes and in the light surrounding us was each memory we had together. My hands were getting hotter but I didn't care. If I died with him in my arms then so be it, at least we would be together.

A shockwave erupted and engulfed us both and I held on hard to him as everyone else in the room was sent flying back against the walls and floor. Windows shattered and blew out. Doors swung open and came off their hinges with deafening noise. The furniture moved against the walls and then the walls themselves groaned and creaked. Around the room people were screaming as they tried to hold onto something to keep themselves from being thrown against the walls.

The Blue light surged and blew out all lights, shattering glass everywhere. Then suddenly everything stopped. I was being pulled away from him and I was screaming. I looked towards my back and a Watched had hauled me away from Slade. I looked back down at him and he looked so peaceful but I could tell that It hadn't worked. Slade was dead.

I tore myself away from the watcher and I brought Slade's face gently up to mine and pressed my lips to his.

"I love you" I whispered to him.

Theon moved up towards Slade as the Watcher pulled me away again. The other Watchers had guns raised towards the CWT members and out of the corner of my eye I could see two Watchers were also physically moving Tori away outside as she screamed to let her go.

I turned one last time to look at him and Theon had Slade's head rested on his lap.

"Goodbye" I whispered as the Watchers tied my hands behind my back and walked me out the door and in to one of three black SUV cars.
