Chapter Twelve.
Countless screams went through the room where David, Vanessa, Morgan, Robert and Kira were being operated. For the occasion the surgeons were equipped with earmuffs. David wondered in moments of clarity in between his suffering why only the patients didn't receive one. It took about forty-five minutes to completely clean David's wounds and laser the edges.
"Removing the dead tissue is the first priority. From the information that we have gained from Peter you will heal rather quickly after this procedure", one of the surgeons said.
"You will be lead to a sterile room after we opened your wounds to heal up without any change of infecting the gaping wounds we temporarily create here. Don't worry, it is all perfectly safe", another surgeon added.
David didn't like their tone. Even though their words were meant to calm them down, he could still hear the enjoyment of hurting them in between their soothing words. It felt as how the single parents roamed the streets on the Halloween night. Some were even singing their own thought up songs to strike fear into the children. He had seen how much they enjoyed luring the children out, and trapping them. How easy it was for them to slice the children apart as if they were pieces of cooked chicken on a plate.
And now he was laying in a room, open and vulnerable. Any of these surgeons could wipe them out at any second. And David had never felt more powerless than right now. He looked at Vanessa who was laying next to him. The surgeon was happily lasering through her flesh as if he was finishing an unfinished painting. Careful around the edges , but in the middle as careless as anyone could be. But what would it matter, David thought. They would simply correct their mistakes by cutting more of their flesh out. No harm done, they heal fast.
On the other side he looked at how Kira, Robert and Morgan were reacting to the surgery. From the three it seemed Morgan moved and screamed the least. But he was nothing compared to Vanessa's calmness.
He kept watching them. The surgeons were already done with David, so he could observe them quietly. Five minutes later Kira had fainted, and Robert just kept screaming like a little girl. Morgan's scars looked the most severe still, and David saw how Three surgeons were working at him at the same time.
"David, are you still there?", Vanessa asked next to him. "I can't hear you anymore. What's going on?"
"They are done with me. I didn't have many scars. How are you doing?"
"It hurts. But your voice makes it less painful", Vanessa said. "Will you stay with me after all this?"
"Of course I will",. David said. He felt guilty towards Vanessa. There was no way he could just leave her. She was blind now and she needed someone in her life to rely on. And he, who clearly has suffered the least from everyone in this room, had a lot to repay.
"Thanks David. I think I'm going to faint now too", Vanessa said before passing out.
David looked at her body. It was probably for the best she went unconscious. The deepest scars were still not being worked on.
"But what's this? The girls were the first to faint, huh", the Surgeon working on Vanessa said. "No wonder, their bodies are a lot more fragile and their minds too."
"Take that back!", David screamed. "Vanessa is stronger than all you surgeons combined!"
"Oh is that so?", the surgeon said uninterested. "And why does your girlfriend here need your help to defend her then?"
David fell silent. Talking to this guy didn't seem to be of much use.
"But this won't do. Not at all", the surgeon continued. "Fetch me some adrenaline. She needs to be awake at this procedure."
