Chapter 3
An alarm went off to announce the start of the night and the sound bounced between the houses. The children in the gardens knew they were allowed to move now, and they were swiftly filling the street.
Weird, David thought. They’re usually eager to explain all of the rules. This year they skipped some of the rules that were instated before. Like the thing about Safe Zones. Children would be safe for one hour from any threats. Perhaps they're out for more blood than the last few years?
First things first. Visit the places he's sure not to get killed because they know him well. The neighbours were always a safe bet. He ran quickly towards Mrs. Barkley next door and rang the bell.
"Ah, David, we have been expecting you," she said.
"Trick or Treat,” David said. He knew he should enjoy it while it lasted and produced a grim smile to mask his worries.
"Treat, one candy, please. They didn’t give a complete explanation this year, did they?" she said.
"No, they did not. But I know about the Safe zones. So I know I can be safe for one hour in the graveyard, even when it was not announced," David said nervously.
"What a horrible rule they added this year... I hope you survive David. You are now as old as our daughter was three years ago. You've grown up fast."
"I never asked you this, but how did Sabine die?" David asked. "How could anyone harm her when she was so close to home?"
"You know the GPS surgically inserted at birth, right? They place it right next to the heart. So when a rule is broken, the shock makes your heart stop. It's quick and painless they say. But you are long enough alive to consciously experience a second or two. It's comforting. I was glad to hear from Sabine that she didn't blame me. So one of the rules that night was not to get too close to home. If you did, well.. Just be careful that you don't get homesick, because they inserted that rule permanently.
"Thanks for the advice Mrs B. I have to go now," David said.
"I know, dear. Good luck... And may your bell rings be at safe houses," Mrs Berkley said.
The next three doors were uneventful and David was glad that it all went so quickly. Fortunately for David the parents were nice enough to either activate their deadly traps later that night, or tell him exactly how to walk to not be harmed. He some good luck wishes from people he knew and they closed the door quickly after his visit. The people in his street loved him, so they were not likely to attack him. They were parents who didn't go out to 'enjoy' the trick or treating. Most of them got married and had children very quickly to never attend the Halloween night. They only had to dress up.
Most of the people David would visit that night would be grateful to receive one piece of candy. But once a kid was killed, their sweets were free for the taking. So parents had extra reasons to kill children in their gardens. When David left the fourth house in the street another announcement was made and the two other thirteen year olds in the street stopped in the garden to listen to the event.
"Good evening ladies and Gentlemen. This is a short announcement for all you kids out there still alive! It's a splendid rule if I say so myself. You see, there have been many children in the past who just have their neighbors lined up to quickly accept the child's piece of candy and scan it in so the children can just go hide for the rest of the night until it's over. To them I say : Shame on you!
To make sure you kids don't cheat this way and to encourage them to explore the whole town, I have made this splendid rule to weed out these children , said Peter Gibbiwibbs. His voice could be hears from the many megaphones that hang on houses in the streets for this night.
