Prologue.
It was cold. That was all David could remember when he awakened from the horror that was Halloween night. How long had it been? The sun was at a different place. The sky was one big blur. He was only vaguely aware that he was not alone. He tried to blink a few times, but his vision did not improved much. It all stayed one big blur. He tried to listen to the things happening around him but there was no noise with the movement. Did he become deaf? The blinking took more energy than he anticipated. And before he fainted he saw a dark silhouette bowing over him.
A few miles away from David, two people were enjoying themselves a little too much over the nasty event that they had finished hosting.
"It seems like we failed this year," said one of two voices "Not only did we get less casualties than we anticipated, the targets were all still alive. And what's more, we can't even get a hold of them now."
There were a male and a female in the room. The man seemed more worried than the woman. His words were definitely reflecting that. The woman was tired. She did not enjoy herself as much as the man did. But from the look on her face you could see she was glad it was over.
"They have shown more courage and endurance than expected, but there is still a long way for them to go if they would actually want to change anything. Keep in mind we see this kind of things every year. Was there a reason why you tend to dislike that boy more than any of the other children Peter?" The woman said.
"Disliking isn't the right word. But I did expect him to die. But he overcame that challenge," Peter said.
"It was almost as if he knew what would happen every time we introduced a new rule. He was either helped or it was all sheer luck. And you know me, I don't believe in luck," the woman said.
"They still have a long way to go. And I'm rather intrigued by them," Peter said.
"If we're lucky they might even finish each other before they even come close to us." She did not looked as worried as Peter.
"How would they know where to find us though?", Peter asked.
"I don't know exactly, but they always do. I suspected before that they might have had help. This year more than ever. But the girl seemed to be especially lucky."
Peter looked worried still. He didn't like it when things didn't go the way he planned them.
"Perhaps next year will be better," said the woman. She smiled. "Your task is over. Now all that remains is the path ahead. You can take your leave and I will wrap things up here."
Peter grinned. "Yes this will definitely get interesting. Keep me posted." Peter left the room shortly afterwards. He could finally enjoy his vacation.
"David.. David," the words echoed in his head. His limbs felt heavy and he felt a big headache coming. But he was conscious. The pain of various wounds seared through his brain. He wasn't dead? He tried to remember what happened exactly. He saw Tina, the girl he met earlier in the night. They ran towards each other, they hugged. There was something wrong though. Yes.. she was about to die. Then there was this moment he got scared and.. then it all got dark. He remembered waking up for a little while. At least he wasn't deaf anymore, David thought.
"Don't strain yourself too much David. You have suffered a lot of injuries and the blood on the sword that pierced you has poisoned your body. Try to get more sleep. We'll talk soon.", He couldn't place the voice. It was different from Tina's. Or wasn't it? His eyes didn't help him much either to make out who she was. It was all still a blur. He felt safe at least. That was a great burden from his shoulders already. Someone was looking out for him.
"Is he awake yet?" a different voice said.
"Just barely," the girl said. "I think I got through to him. He's resisting the treatments less than before. He got stabbed and slashed a lot more times than me even. Not to mention the blood poisoning he must have endured from laying on the floor. It's a miracle he is still alive."
"What a great kid. You should've seen him in the Halloween night. If I were you I'd stick with him until the very end." The voice sounded like an adult male, David figured, but it cost him all his remaining energy. He felt himself fainting again.
"I can't wait to see him up and running."
"I'd love to talk to him again", the girl said to the other person. "But that will have to wait for now. Go to sleep again David."
And so he did.
