Chapter Eight.
As David and Billy sneaked through the streets away from the graveyard. Only just now there had been another announcement , but they only heard "-good luck kids!" before the message subsided. There were no repeats, so they became even more afraid than they already were. They hid in the alleys and bushes with everything that moved and even though David knew this wasn't the best of tactics to use in the last hour. There was still so many pieces of candy to give out, he didn't feel like taking any more risk. It also wasn't like Billy was a coward. On the contrary, he ran in front of David most of the time. His eyes wide open, his ears constantly alert to any sound.
It wasn't particularly quiet around them. They weren't too sure at first, but they were getting used to the howling sounds in the background. Would the government actually release wolves for the Trick or Treating? Or was it just some mad fanatic joke for a group of people who just wanted a killing spree? They didn't know, and silently David considered quite futilely which of the two would be most painful.
They left the suburban part and went towards the more crowded area of his town. David rarely visited this place because he had no friends or relatives living here. So he didn't know much about the people here other than his Halloween survival tips. From his point of view this was a nasty place to be right now though. Not many children would go into the apartments to deliver candy. Especially not this year since five per street was the maximum. An unnerving sensation went through his spine when he thought of this. A lot of children must have died here. Seen as the population is also thicker here, chances for fanatics is bigger as well. There weren't many hiding spots available either.. They could easily trap children at the staircases and in the light of the lanp poles next to the apartments, he could see the blood on the windows at the staircase area of them. The streets themselves weren't much better either. Everywhere they looked were loose limbs that cleaners had not taken with them yet. There were only a few thin trees to hide behind, and even the cars seemed to have been parked elsewhere for this special night to prevent more hiding places.
David didn't like it. Billy seemed more at ease though. Perhaps he lived around here? That would make sense perhaps.
"Billy," David whispered, " Why are we here? This is one of the most dangerous places to be right now, except perhaps from the town square. Why would we go here?" He noticed his voice was shaking more than he expected. Was he getting tired?
"I've got a plan," Billy whispered back. "Just trust me ok?"
"Billy?" A voice said loudly behind them. "Billy is that you?"
Billy froze on the spot and David almost walked into him. He looked around and saw a woman with two golden sickles in the alley next to them.
"Where is your brother, Billy?" she said. David froze. The lamp light revealed her eyes. He didn't know how to describe it fully. She looked.. off.
Billy didn't answer. David looked at hi. He was scared. Automatically he stepped slowly away from the woman, who walked slowly towards them.
"I.. I couldn't find a tenth Billy," she whispered loudly enough to make herself heard. "What happened to Tommy? What happened to my Tommy?"
"He didn't make it," Billy responded. He sounded defeated. As if he already knew the contempt he was about to receive. Even David could feel it before she said another word. This was going to end badly.
"He was my favorite you know," She said.
"Don't say that Mom," Billy replied. He was on the verge of crying, David noticed. "You know I love you Mom."
