Chapter seven
"You should've seen the look on your face David, priceless", Morgan said.
David was sitting along with Morgan and Vanessa on the low 'breakfast table' that Vanessa had prepared for them. David looked rather agitated while Morgan kept laughing while pouring more and more sirrup on his pancakes. Vanessa was just gazing in front of her. She wasn't really awake yet, and it was way too crowded in the morning to her taste.
"You were so convincing though. The panic in your face would make anyone believe you", David said.
"It has been useful in the past, I tell you. But honestly though, that sign was nice to put there for me to find you two again. Though if it were someone else, perhaps you wouldn't be as lucky. Not everyone that's 'free' has the best interest at heart for the others. Technically you're now as much outlaws as you were in the Halloween night."
David looked at Vanessa and then slowly at the front door from which the lock was still broken by Vanessa's brutal action. He hadn't felt really unsafe before, but now he thought they would be better off with a few more locks and perhaps a better weapon than a fire axe for each of them.
"But it's different now though. I mean, there isn't a kill quota now and the people who are freed like us are appreciative right? That would mean they wouldn't have any motive to harm us more than anyone else", Vanessa said. She yawned half the sentence, but both David and Morgan seemed to have figured out what she said anyway.
"That's so naively cute", Morgan said in a demeaning tone, Vanessa suddenly seemed a lot more awake than seconds before. "but I thought you figured it out by now already. Not everyone in this town is originated from here."
"What..?", David said. He stared at Morgan. It was something unthinkable. Sure he could understand that people went out of the town like Morgan did. But people actually being born elsewhere? Preposterous!
"Is it so hard to understand? We live on a huge round sphere, and even though you use a lot of products here that require a lot of land, still there is a hell of a lot more ground that is either unexplored or inhabited!"
"That's... mad!", Vanessa joined in with David's confusion.
"Did they really not teach you at school about the world outside the town?"
"No", both David and Vanessa answered.
"And you think I'm mad? Man this is opposite world all over again. Ok let me put this simple to you. This town is not the center of the universe. It's actually somewhere close to a bigger city. Sometimes people like me visit this place. Most of us just for fun. Some like to study how people react to certain things. Some like to.. cruelly influence the people. "
"Do you mean like the people who gave the rules to Peter Gibbiwibs?", David asked.
"Peter Gibbiwibs didn't receive orders from anyone. He's above the government. He order's them! Not the other way around."
"That's so twisted!", Vanessa said angrily. "I'd love to take him down."
"Now now, don't get from innocent to vengeful so quickly. That's bad for you.", Morgan said.
"Why?" , Vanessa said.
"You'll get wrinkles", Morgan said. He couldn't keep his laugh in any longer. David laughed along with him. Vanessa just sat there quietly, with her hands clenging the table. Then she smiled.
"You're just like my brothers, Morgan. They also knew how to press my buttons."
After the breakfast David and Vanessa quickly changed into normal clothing and started to fortify their apartment. Vanessa nicked a few locks from the locksmith a few blocks away, while David reeled in the flag with Morgan.
