Chapter 5: What Did You Say?!

You and Lucy crash through the underbrush, sharp thorns ripping your already ripped clothes. Not too far off, you could hear the footsteps of officers chasing you. You grab Lucy's hand and take a sharp turn, attempting to throw them off your trail.

Suddenly, you abruptly stop, reaching a cliff ledge. "What the actual fu-"

"(Y/n)! We have to jump! They're almost here!" Lucy interrupts, keeping her voice to a whisper-yell. You peer over the edge. The cliff was actually pretty short; twenty feet or so to the bottom. And there was water at the bottom. How convenient.

"Ok... On three! One... Two... Three!" You jump, still holding onto Lucy's hand. The feeling of hitting the water was equivalent to the feeling of being thrown full force against a concrete wall. The breath was knocked out of you, and you immediately sucked in the frigid water. You push against the strong current, trying to reach the surface. When you break the surface, you gasp for air. The air stung your throat, but you still gasped it in. You desperately push against the current, trying to reach the shore. Eventually you can feel your feet hitting rocks, so the river wasn't too deep.

You collapse on dry land, shivering and breathing heavily.

I'm never, ever, doing that again...

You lay on your back, soaking in the weak yet warm sunlight. "Wait... Lucy?" You call out, scanning the land for her. But she was nowhere in sight. "Well shit." You mutter. This was bad.

Natsu will probably be mad that I lost her... I have to find her before Natsu finds me or her!

"Hey, (Y/n)!" Natsu's voice sounded above you. You look up, shielding your eyes from the sun. Natsu was on the cliff that you and Lucy had jumped from. Instead of jumping into the water, Natsu jumps, landing easily on the ground. "What a show-off..." You mutter. He grins. You'd forgotten about his keen hearing.

"Where's Lucy?" Happy asked. He had flown down from the small cliff. "She... I'm not sure..." You trail off, unable to meet either of their gazes. "What do you mean, you're not sure?" Natsu questions. "I... We jumped into the river... But... I couldn't see her... When I came up..." You stare at your feet. "You had one job, ya know (Y/n)? And you failed!" Natsu shouts angrily at you. You cower, close to tears. "I didn't... It was an accident..." You whisper, your eyes blurry with tears.

This... is all my fault. You spin around, tears streaming down your face. You run, tripping over bushes and tree roots. I couldn't even keep up with one person... Your misery clouds your thoughts. They would've been better off without me. If they had never taken me, this wouldn't have happened. It's all my fault that Lucy is gone... You dig your fingernails into your hands, a trickle of blood running from the cuts they made.

A misjudged step sends you tumbling down a small hill, giving you even more cuts and bruises. You lay still, intending to lay there forever. I doubt they'll come looking for me anyways... You close your eyes, wishing that Natsu had never fallen on top of your car. It's too late now though.

*Natsu POV*

I charge through the woods after (Y/n). I felt horrible about making her cry. I had just been frustrated at that moment, and had taken it out on her. Happy flies behind me, trying to keep up. I stop, trying to catch her scent. When I pick it up, I find that it leads down a hill. A crumpled form is at the bottom.

*Your POV*

"(Y/n)? Are you ok?" You can feel someone shaking you, but you keep your eyes closed. Maybe they would go away if you didn't respond. You'd been dreaming about something, and you were trying to remember what it had been."(Y/n)! Get up! You gotta... I'm really sorry... I shouldn't have yelled at you... Please forgive me..." You open your eyes a little, peering into Natsu's face. His face was full of worry.
