Chapter 26: What Happened in the Future Anyways?

"Target sighted.. Locking in now... engaging in three.... two.... one...." You dash towards the car. It was located alone at the end of a supermarket parking lot, the same supermarket you had shoplifted the pizza from. It was a five seat car, with a somewhat worn red paint job. Small patches of the dull red color were peeling off, and there was a dent in the back bumper. But it was the best option you had right now, so you didn't have time to be picky.

"Just hurry up and do what you have to do!" Natsu whispered, rolling his eyes.

You begin preparations to pick the lock of the car with some bobby pins before realizing something. You had something that you hadn't had before. Magic.

You place your hand on the locked car door, closing your eyes and focusing. You still weren't very good at using your magic, which was understandable. After all, you had only really practiced it for a month. And for most of that time period you hadn't actually been training.

A small click startles you out of your thoughts. "That was surprisingly easy.." You narrow your eyes. "Almost too easy..." You mentally shrug, motioning towards Natsu to get in the passenger seat. He quickly approached the car, eyeing it as if it might try to attack him. You roll your eyes.

"Relax. Get in before someone sees us," you say, looking around with worry. Hopefully you hadn't been spotted already... If the police began chasing after you and Natsu, it would only be that much harder to focus on saving the world.

"Excuse me... That's my car..." Your head slowly turns to your left. The car door was still open. An elderly lady stood outside of the car, holding two grocery bags in her hands. "Did I come to the wrong car? Oh no..." She began talking to herself aloud, her eyes confused and slightly dazed over as she worried.

Guilt began eating away at your gut. "Ah- actually, we knew this was your car! We saw you left it unlocked and decided to wait until you came back out so that no one would steal it!" You quickly cover up. Her eyes widen in surprise before she smiles.

"Young people these days! So kind... thank you so much! I could've sworn I had locked it this time... Really, thank you," The old lady thanked you over and over before finally driving away in her old, rusty red car. You watched her until she was out of sight.

"Good one. I'm sure that lady will thank you in five days when the world ends, all because we couldn't get a car to drive us to Manhantan to save it!" Natsu exclaimed with a surprising amount of anger. You felt yourself grow defensive as you glared at him.

"I couldn't steal from an old women! What if that was the only thing that could get her home? What if she was stranded here because we stole her car?" You ask him, crossing your arms over your chest.

"Whatever. We're wasting time. We need to get out of this Schroon place," Natsu said, looking away. His voice was still laced with a certain amount of anger.

Although you did agree with him. Something about Schroon seemed too... peaceful. It felt so isolated from the rest of the population, like it was behind somehow. It was too quiet here, and everything seemed too... perfect.

Frankly, it was unnerving.

"Let's go," You finally say, walking away from the grocery store parking lot.

"Where?"

"We need to find another car or something that can get us to Manhattan." Before you could leave the open space of the parking lot, a voice shouted from the other side.

"That's them! They're the ones who didn't pay for their stay at my inn!"

You shut your eyes, praying you didn't just hear what you think you did. Your feet freeze up, stubbornly refusing to move. You can hear footsteps running towards you, growing louder and louder.
