Chapter 29

Beckham's POV

I was banking on my strength not being completely depleted as I swung my legs to the beam behind me then cut the rope that was holding my harness. I heard the scream of my muscles as my weight fell to them, but I had to hold tight. Remy was counting on me and I had to get us out of here. The man at the door was yelling for back up all the while struggling with his hand gun.

Something was obviously wrong with it or else I would have been shot before I even cut the rope to my harness. I was counting on his malfunctioned gun to buy us some time.

I kicked open the small door on the ceiling that opened to the roof and then turned back to help Remy.

"I'm going to need you to pull yourself up to where these beams cross and then I'll cut your ropes," I told her.

She looked terrified as she stared at the man below and was pinned to her current position.

"Ren! Focus! We have to get out of here. Now pull yourself up to the cross of these beams," I firmly said again.

She snapped out of her fear just enough to do as I said, but seemed to float through the motions. She was in shock and if I didn't snap her out of it soon, she would get us both killed.

I reached across and cut her rope while pushing up towards the opening in the ceiling. She groggily responded by pulling herself onto the roof and then waiting for me to crawl out.

A shot sang by my leg, only missing me by ricocheting off one of the steel beams to my left. The bullets kept coming as did the close calls as I tried to pull myself out of the room. The ropes would have to stay and the harnesses would have to stay on us until we had time to stop.

One bullet found my shoulder as it tore off a piece of my shirt and grazed the skin enough to draw a bit of blood. I didn't feel the sting of the cut yet, but I would as soon as my adrenaline wore off. In one motion, I pulled myself out of the small opening, grabbed Remy's damp hand, then started running.

The slope of the roof did not agree with my weakened legs, but I willed them to kept going. I was halfway afraid that I would have to start dragging Remy behind me, but she was following me so far.

We made it to the edge of this roof only to be greeted by another a few feet lower. I let go of her hand and jumped down, then motioned for her to follow me. I saw the fear in her and the hesitation and stood on the edge.

"Come on Remy. We have to keep moving! Just jump and I'll catch you," I reassured her.

She probably would have stood there a bit longer had a mob of rebels not of found their way to the roof. They were on the opposite end from us, but that didn't mean they wouldn't catch us in just a few short minutes.

"Trust me!" I exclaimed in my last attempt to have her follow.

She jumped down not a second later landing right in front of me. Her shaky legs caused her fall into me so I grabbed her arm once more and ran. First came the uphill of the roof then the downhill and what should have been another jump to a neighboring roof. Instead, once we made it to the downhill sloping of the roof, we fell through a weakened part straight into a pile of hay.

I groaned from the impact and turned over to check on Remy. She had tears running down her face, but looked like she was still unhurt.

"Are you okay?" I asked her, cupping her face in one hand and wiping away the stray strands of hair with the other.

She nodded, but said nothing else.

"Come on. We need to get these off before we leave this place," I told her motioning to our harnesses still firmly attached.
