Chapter 13

Ren's POV

We had just made it to the first town, but I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened this morning. My father told me I would start having to shadow him since I would be Queen soon. It made sense. I mean, I needed to learn all the ropes of running the country so I wasn't completely lost after my coronation, but it still surprised me. Especially since the princes staying at the castle. I guess when I wasn't learning how to run the country I would be dating hot guys. Sounds pretty normal.

We were finally walking the streets of the very first town. I felt so weird walking around in the public eye with no tiara and no guards following right behind me. To top things off, I was in the company of two fellows I had very nearly just met.

The town was virtually small, very traditional. Many of the houses were more like shacks, half falling down, but hanging on by a thread.

"This was a good choice, Gail. We can do a lot of work here," I said, slowly looking around at where I was standing.

It had become easier to ignore the guards that followed me with every step I took. It wasn't that I wasn't used to it, but normally they trailed behind me or walked in front. On this day, they lurked in coffee shops and convenient stores, all in a different disguise so as not to give away who I was.

My father insisted that we double the guards this year since Prince Beckham and Isaac were coming. I wasn't particularly happy about this, but I didn't argue. I knew some things were necessary and unfortunately, this was one of them.

"So what do we do now that we're here? Explore?"

"Basically," I replied to Isaac, pulling up a map of the small town on my phone.

"We should probably head down this main road and then double back through some smaller ones," Gail suggested, scrolling through the map on her phone as well.

"I agree," I replied, pulling my sunglasses over my eyes as the sun started to peek through the clouds. "Can you pass over the camera?"

Gail searched through her backpack until she pulled out the small device that we used once a year for this day.

I snapped a shot of the town from where I was standing, signalling the start of our day.

"Now Gail, remember that Prince Beckham and Isaac may not be able to communicate with some of these people."

"Right. I'll keep that in mind," she tapped her head.

Even though some countries had their own languages, all the Royals spoke the universal language. It was initially invented to make communication better between the monarchies, but now, many countries taught the language in their schools. In Kedudien, it was typically only taught in the big cities so anyone here over the age of thirty or uneducated probably didn't know it.

"So where should we start first," Beckham asked, putting a hand over his eyes to block the sun.

"Maybe we should split up, to cover more ground," Gail spoke up, smirking at me when she saw my obvious surprise.

"We never split up," I argued, trying to come up with a better excuse, but clearly failing.

"Yeah, but we also never have guests. Maybe with four people and two groups, we can cover more ground and see more of the town."

What she actually meant was 'You need to go on a proper date with this guy so here's your chance'.

Gee, thanks Gail.

"That sounds like a great idea," I said with a tight smile and hard eyes directed towards Gail. "I'll just let the guards know."

Gail smirked at me, one last time and mouthed 'I love you'. She knew she had won, but she still had to rub it in my face.
