Chapter 2

Ren's POV

I soon realized my room was of no help and came up with a different plan. Go see Gail.

Gail Folks and I have been best friends ever since I was five. We met when the kingdom was having the annual Kork Parade. That particular year, the royal carriage had been under maintenance and the replacement carriage had been a disaster. It was supposed to be just as good as the one we usually use, but it wasn't. Halfway through the parade, the carriage broke down and Daddy suggested that we walk. So we did, hand in hand, down the crowded road, with many guards walking with us.

It just so happened though, that the place where the carriage broke down, was exactly where Gail and her family were standing. So as I was standing beside the carriage, waiting to see if it could be fixed, I met my best friend.

It took a little while for her family to get over the formalities, but now, our families were really close. They come to eat dinner at the castle all the time.

I grabbed a coat and a scarf, then motioned for some guards to follow me as I walked out of the castle.

I called Frank and had him bring the car around and then decided not to leave a note for Lady Emma. She would figure out I was gone eventually.

Kedudien was a beautiful country and the route to Gail's house was particularly so. I enjoyed just watching the hills roll by and the sun peek out just above the clouds.

I really wish I had my camera right now.

The drive was short and I found myself stumbling out of the car in a very unladylike manner. I'm lucky the paps aren't here yet. They would have had a field day with that.

I opened the door of the little wooden house and immediately caught the scent of something cooking.

"Ren, so good to see you dear. You haven't visited all week. I was starting to think something was wrong," Mrs. Folks joked. She was standing at the stove stirring something in a big silver pot.

So that's what smells so good.

At the sight of her cooking, I remembered I forgot to bring her food from the garden. Gail's family was really poor, but never accepted money from me, no matter how many times I offered. So I helped out in different ways, for example, bringing fresh foods or old clothes of mine.

"Well, don't just stand there. Come give me a hug," Mrs. Folks exclaimed, wiping her hands on her apron.

I smiled and walked over to welcoming arms.

Mrs. Folks was like my mom since my real mother abandoned me and my dad. She helped me with the things that couldn't be bought or studied.

Like her motherly hugs.

I broke out of her warm embrace and smiled at her.

"I've been a little busy this week with a new governess," I remarked, making a face.

"You're not giving her too much trouble are you?"

I sheepishly smiled as she put her hands on her hips.

"Of course you are," she huffed. "Well, since you're here, could you help me really quick," she asked.

I nodded, as she turned back to the pot on the stove.

"I know you can't cook so I just need you to cut up a few vegetables and then put them into the pot while I stir."

She pointed to the celery and squash on the table and I went over to get to work.
