Super Junior has formed subgroups that would focus on specific audiences of music. Since 2005 (debut) up until now, a total of five subgroups has been formed.

Each member of Super Junior was put into at least one subgroup except Kibum who was on hiatus.

The subgroups were created,

_as a part of SM Entertainment's strategy to not limit the group's activities while certain members focus on their individual careers,
_as a way of giving the group members greater freedom to focus on different elements of their careers,
_as a way of providing the group opportunities to explore different musical styles and showcase different skills,
_as an excellent way of reaching out for different audiences and cultures of music so that the group can popularize effectively in South Korea as well as outside of South Korea,
_and to show that Super Junior could accommodate and perform different musical genres.

This strategy was later challenged by critics, as it has influenced an overwhelming amount of music groups to create official and unofficial subgroups alike.
