Chapter 2
KATANA'S POV:After I got home I took a quick shower and then started getting ready for dinner. The hard part was choosing what to wear. I have lots of formal dresses but that wasn't the problem. Kylar was. If he kept his promise then he and his family would be at the restaurant with us. So he would definitely see me.
Should I go for slightly dressy or go all out? I asked myself.
Probably somewhere in between.
Finally, I chose a flowered yellow dress that came to about two inches above my knees, a solid yellow headband, and a pair of funky heels.
I applied some yellow eye-shadow, brown mascara, and some brown-black eyeliner but I skipped the blush because I assumed I would already be doing plenty of that.
"Katana, you ready to go?" Dad yelled up the stairs.
"Sure!" I yelled back, checking my reflection in the mirror one more time before heading downstairs.
I climbed into the backseat of my parents dark green minivan. I so wish I could drive but, being 15, I can't, no matter how much I want to.
The restaurant, Sea Water, was only a couple minutes away so we got there quickly. I fidgeted all the way there. You can probably figure out why.
We entered the building and a waitress directed us to our table. A four seater. When the Camdens got here I would be kicked to another table with the three boys so that my parents could sit with Gregg and Martha. Sigh.
We sat down and ordered our drinks while deciding what to order.
"Tana, we're here." Kylar. Great.
"How you doing, Martha, Gregg." Mom greeted them. "Stephen, Kylar, Zachary how's school?"
Much to their dismay, the Camden boys are home-schooled. Except for Stephen, the oldest. He's in college now.
"Fine Mrs. Winters." They chorused.
There are three boys, by the way. Stephen is 19, Kylar is 17, and Zach is 13.
Okay, back to dinner.
"Would you like to join us?" Dad asked.
"That would be lovely." Gregg said.
Mom gave me a pointed look.
Time for my exit, I told myself.
I got up from the table and walked across the room to the farthest four seat table that I could find, which happened to be a booth table (you know, the kind that have the two things, one on the left and one on the right, where you just slide in) the boys trailing me like little ducklings following their mother.
I slid into one and immediately realized I had made a mistake. Kylar slid in next to me, trapping me against the wall.
Zach and Stephen sat on the other side, giving each other a little glance. I almost missed it, it was so quick, but then I realized I hadn't been hallucinating. I got a very bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.
"So Tana, what did you do today?" Kylar asked, "Besides stalk me at the grocery store, of course."
My mouth dropped open. "I was not stalking you!" I protested. "I was running past the store and I saw your car and thought I'd drop in and say hi."
He smirked. "Yeah, right."
"It's true!" I insisted.
"Oh you know you can't resist me." He said leaning closer, sliding along the table. Zach and Stephen were watching us with amused expressions on their faces.
I was pretty sure that my face was the color of the seats (red, of course). "N-no way! I despise you!" I sputtered. "All you do is tease me and torture me. It's like a requirement for you to make my life miserable whenever you can."
His smile dimmed, but didn't vanish. "So? You like the whole bad boy thing. Admit it."
"Stop it!" I pushed him away. "I don't like you that way."
"I bet you do but you're too-"
"Give Tana a break." Stephen said. "She's not gonna admit to anything, if there is anything to admit."
Kylar backed off and opened his menu.
'Thank you.' I mouthed to Stephen.
He winked. 'Sure thing.'
We ordered our food, and while we were waiting for it to be delivered, I asked Stephen, "How are your college classes going?"
Stephen had actually asked me to tutor him, since his classes were harder than he thought they would be. If it was up to my parents, they would just graduate me right now but I wanted to go through all of the grades and not just stop. What would I do all day? My parents would kill me if I just read books all the time.
"I'm doing better. Not straight A's like you but I've got my grade up to a solid B average." He said.
"That's good. Do you need any more tutoring in the near future?" I asked.
"Nah, I'm good for now. But if I need help I'll let you know." He smiled.
Kylar scowled. "Stop monopolizing all of Tana's attention!"
"Jealous, little brother?" Stephen smirked.
"No!"
"You are! Ooh, little Kylar has a crush on Tana!"
This time I wasn't the only one blushing.
"Stop it, Stevie!" He growled.
"Haha! You're right. He only calls you that when he's trying to make you mad so that you'll drop the subject." Zach said with a gleeful look on his face.
A waitress brought us our food then, so we stopped goofing around long enough for her to set it on the table and tell us to enjoy our meal. All the while sneaking looks at Stephen.
"Stephen, I think you have an admirer." I said.
He waved his hand dismissively, digging into his food.
Stephen had gotten lasagna, Kylar got spaghetti, Zach got macaroni and steak- a weird combination, but he's a weird kid- and I got fettuccine alfredo and soup. There were bread-sticks on the table.
The table wasn't silent for long.
"So Tana, why did your parents come here tonight?" Zach asked.
"Oh, they have something bad to tell me and they think this will make the blow softer or something." I said. "They'll probably tell me after we're done eating. Or now, I guess, 'cause they're coming over here now."
They pulled up a couple of chairs from another table.
"So, what's the bomb that you have to drop on me?" I asked.
"Well, since you obviously know that we have something to tell you, we're not gonna beat around the bush."
The next two words changed my life forever.
"We're moving."
Nobody moved. I dropped my fork on my plate. Zach's mouth hung open and Stephen was clenching his fists under the table.
"No way." I said, then squeezed over Kylar and ran out the door, slamming it behind me.
