Chapter 15
JUSTIN'S POV:

I had no idea what was going on in Kat's life. I only met her yesterday. But there was something in me that wanted to protect her and keep her away from anyone who tried to hurt her, with words or fists. No, I don't think I like her, I just want to protect her.

When Matt and I were done listening to her, we got busy painting the inside of her tree-house. We each worked on one wall until were done, then Matt and I did the remaining wall and she painted the ceiling. She had a slightly larger can of black that she painted the roof with.

"Why are you painting the ceiling black if the walls are purple?" Matt finally asked the question that I wanted to ask.

"You'll see." she said.

"I hate it when people say that. I'm too impatient to wait." Matt complained.

"Yet you always manage to wait." I said, grinning.

He glared at me. "I was trying to get her to tell us."

"She'll tell us when she can't stand to keep it to herself anymore." I said.

"Or," she suggested, "Maybe you could just wait until I'm done with the second part. For which I need to go the store and get some more paint. So I'll probably check the bus schedule and go sometime tomorrow."

"I have a car." Matt said. "I could take you."

"Wait." Kat said. "How old are you guys? I know nothing about you."

"I'm seventeen." Matt said. "And Justin's twenty."

"Oh, wow. Normally best friends are within a year of each other." she said, "I'm fifteen. Almost 16. My birthday's next month."

I raised my eyebrows. "Really? You easily look seventeen or eighteen."

She blushed. "Oh."

"It's not a bad thing!" I said quickly. "It just means that...umm..."

"You're just digging a hole for yourself Justin." Matt said, smirking at me.

"Never mind." I muttered. "When are we gonna eat? I'm starving!"

"Boys." Kat sniffed in mock superiority. "Always thinking about their stomachs."

"I'll have you know." I said, with equal superiority. "That my stomach is very important."

She snorted. "Yeah, and I'm the queen of Egypt."

"Really? You are?" Matt asked. "We're friends of royalty?"

"No, you twit!" she exclaimed, smacking his arm. "I'm joking. It's called sarcasm."

"Oh." he looked disappointed.

"Dude, you're really gullible." she giggled.

I spoke up before he could start pouting.

"Can we eat? Please?"

Kat sighed. "Sure, Justin. And you can tell me all about yourselves while you eat."

"Alright." I agreed.

She pulled the bag out from behind her and started handing us things from it. She gave Matt and I each three sandwiches, a bag of chips, a bottle of red Sunny-D and five cookies.

"I don't think I'll be able to eat all of this." Matt said.

"You'll be fine." I said. "You always say that."

Kat grinned and bowed her head for a moment, the brought it back up and took a bite out of her sandwich.

"What was that?" I asked.

She looked a little sheepish.

"Umm, I was praying. I pray before I eat."

"Why?"

"Because I'm a Christian." she said it so softly I almost didn't hear her.

"I am too." Matt said. "Why are you ashamed of it?"

She looked surprised. "I'm not. I've just...lost friends over that fact and haven't really had any since then. Are you a Christian Justin?"

"Actually." I said. "I'm Catholic but I've been thinking about becoming a Christian because Catholicism doesn't exactly line up with the Bible. In the Bible, they pray to God and trust in Him to forgive them for their sins, they don't just do penance and their Hail Marys and expect to get into Heaven by their good works."

She smiled softly. "That's a good thing. I do what I can to tell others about God and what He's done for us by sending Jesus, but I've been ridiculed so many times and it's discouraging. I had to leave my homeschool group because the razzing was so bad. My parents have no idea what happened. They just assume that I dropped out because I didn't like it. They haven't asked, and I haven't shared any additional information about my life. That's how it's been for the longest time."

"You've kept everything in your life to yourself for years? How can you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Keep it in. I'd probably explode within a week."

"Yeah," said Matt. "You spill all your deep, dark and dirty secrets to me."

"Hey!" I protested. "I do not!"

"Yeah, you do!" Matt taunted. "Just yesterday you told me what you-"

I elbowed him in the ribs. "Shut up Matt."

Kat was just giggling, trying to stifle it.

"It's not funny." Matt grumbled. "Stop laughing."

She didn't, she just got louder.

"Alright." Matt said, giving her a glare. "You have a five second head start."

"Huh?"

"Run, Kat, run!" I shouted.

Once she realized what he meant, she scrambled down the ladder and took off, her muscular legs pumping.

Matt grinned and climbed down, sprinting after her. I just sat up in the treehouse, laughing to myself.
