Chapter 9
KATANA'S POV:ONE MONTH LATER
I sighed and finished taping the last box closed. I took the box out and added it to the pile in the former living room. Then I went back and surveyed my empty room. You know how most people always feel sad when they have to move and leave the room that they've lived in all their life? I didn't have the slightest inkling of that. All I felt was numb.
I laid down on the only thing left in my room: the fluffy pink shag rug. I loved it. Kylar had gotten it for me on my 14th birthday. It reminded me of my happier days with him, when I first began to develop a crush on him.
I hadn't heard from him since the incident, which was exactly a month ago today, but I had talked to Stephen either in person, phone calls or texts every day. He said he had been observing Kylar and that he didn't give any indication of calling me to apologize.
At first, it hurt. Badly. There was a deep ache in my chest for two weeks after that night but it slowly started to fade. Today I barely feel a twinge. Even if he apologized, I wouldn't care. I've moved on.
"Katana, is all your stuff packed and in the living room?" Dad called from his former bedroom.
"Former living room!" I shouted, "And the answer is yes. When are the moving dudes getting here?"
"They should be here already." Mom said coming to stand in my doorway, leaning on the frame. "Also, there's someone here to see you."
I propped my head up on my arm. "Is it Stephen?"
"Yes. Why did he come over?"
"I'm not sure. He said he wanted to come, but he didn't tell me why."
"Okay." Mom said, leaving the room.
Stephen bounded in.
"You're acting like a teenager." I said.
"Stop saying that. I'm an adult!" he pretended to be offended.
"Oh, stop it! You're a teenager at heart."
"Am not!" he protested, but he was grinning. We'd had this argument before. Many times.
"Yes, you are. You're nineteen. Now, why did you come over?"
"You don't want me here? I'm wounded."
"No you're not. You just like to make me feel bad."
He smiled and said, "Come on. We're going for a drive."
"In the Ferrari?"
He chuckled. "Yeah. One last ride in the dream car."
I followed him outside, telling my mom where I was going on the way.
"Don't be gone too long!" she told me.
"I won't. See you later. Don't hold lunch for me."
"Alright. Bye sweetie."

As we pulled out of the McDonald's drive-through, Stephen stuffed some French Fries in his mouth and turned to me.
"You wanna drive the car?" he asked.
"I do but I can't. I'm only 15 remember?"
"But what if I said that...I bought some property? You can do whatever you want on private property."
"Really?!" I squealed. "Wait. Why did you buy property?"
"For my new house." he said proudly. "I finally got Mom and Dad to let me move out."
"That great! I'm glad they're letting you." I clapped my hands together. "What did Zachary say about that?"
"He's indifferent about it. Kylar is slightly peeved because he suspects the reason I really want to leave."
"Well, I really don't care." I declared. "Maybe it'll knock some sense into his head."
"Maybe." he looked thoughtful. "Do you want to see him before you leave?"
My eyes shot over to him.
"Are you serious?" I asked.
"Just thought I'd ask!" he said, holding his hands up in defense. The car swerved.
"Keep you're hands on the wheel!" I exclaimed. "I don't want to die yet!"
"Calm down! Sheesh. I'm not gonna kill you. Cause then your parents would kill me and I'm not ready to die yet." he said that last part with a totally straight face.
"That's the only reason? How dare you! And this whole time I thought you actually liked me." I crossed my arms over my chest.
"I'm only kidding Tana."
I stayed silent.
"Tana. Come on. Will you forgive me?"
"Only if you give me the Ferrari." I said, hiding a smirk.
His mouth dropped open.
"Whaaa? Are you serious?"
I burst out laughing.
"Of course not, you dimwit! I can't even drive."
"Oh, good." he looked very relieved.
"I can't believe you actually thought I was serious!" I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe.
"Humph." he grunted.
I just kept laughing.
"Tana, stop laughing. Please."
"Fine." I said, trying to control my giggles.
"Tana, you are one weird girl."
"Thank you." I said, grinning.
"That wasn't supposed to be a compliment." he grumbled.
"So? I like being weird. I'm crazy, too."
"I'll say."
"And you are my fellow crazy partner."
"Hey!" he protested. "I'm not crazy! You're the only one who's crazy. You and Zach."
I considered what he had said for a minute, then said, "Yeah, you're right."
"Thank you."
"You're not crazy, you're insane!" I stuck my tongue out at him.
"What? Okay Tana. Just be quiet until we get there."
I grinned, but complied.
