Chapter 16
KATANA'S POV:As soon as I caught on to what Justin meant, I beat it out of that treehouse faster than I thought possible, and took off like a shot.
I raced around the front of the house and swerved out of the way of another jogger running on the sidewalk.
I glanced back to see Matt, his legs pumping madly, dashing after me with great speed. And catching up.
He was way taller than me, even though I was 5'8". He had to be at least 6'1" and Justin was about the same height.
Turned the corner and sped up, almost to my limit. As I ran, I dodged people and things in my way, jumping over toys left in the road. And, as what usually happens in this sort of situation, I looked back to see how far Matt was behind and I tripped over a skateboard left out.
Instinctly, I put my hands out in front of me, to try and break my fall, which resulted in most of my weight being taken on my my wrists and hands.
"Kat!" Matt stopped next to me and helped me up, panting slightly from chasing me. "Are you okay?"
I shrugged and felt an immense pain shoot through my left arm. "Why do people always ask that?"
"I don't really know." He said, running a hand through his hair which made the middle part stand up, giving him a mohawk look. "But seriously, what hurts?"
I quickly assessed my injuries.
"Well, my palms and knees are scraped, but I think my wrist is sprained or something." I said.
Matt knelt down next to me. "Which one?" He asked.
I held out my left arm, wincing as I did so.
He took my hand gently in his and I felt a fizzle shoot up my arm. I don't know if it was pain or something else.
Matt examined my wrist, probing it gently with his fingers. Even though he was trying to be very gentle, I couldn't hold back a small cry of pain.
He glanced up at me. "Sorry."
"It's okay it just hurts like a-" I bit off my sentence before I could swear.
"You're better at that then I am."
"Better at what?" I asked, confused.
"Not swearing."
"Oh. Um, thanks, I guess."
Matt stood, pulling me up by my right arm. "Let's go back. I'll drive you to the hospital, after I talk to Justin."
I didn't say anything, but turn around and walked back towards my house.
Matt followed me, and soon we were in my backyard, him climbing the ladder and me standing on the ground, watching him and cradling my arm.
"Justin!" Matt hollered.
"Did you catch her?" Justin asked, peeking out of the hole.
"Um, yeah, but I think her wrist is broken."
I started in surprise. I had only thought it was a bad sprain.
"You broke her wrist?"
"No, of course not! She tripped and fell."
"Yeah," I said sarcastically, "Tripping normally results in falling. And are you sure it's broken? I mean it hurts really bad, but couldn't it just be a bad sprain?"
"Pretty sure." Matt said. "Come on, I'll drive you."
"Wait." Justin said, following Matt down the ladder. "You don't have your car close by. I do."
