Eavesdrop

It was in the evening when a message was directed to my room. It was given by Mr. Do, who had been serving our family even before I was born. Of all the years I had been together with him, I found that he was rather queer, since his calmness was beyond average. The maids supposed that he might just be drinking coffee even when there is fire in the house, and I found myself agreeing.

“I suppose the light bulb inside the room was fixed? I guess it is working now. It has been alarming me for days, since the local electricians departed our mansion. I am glad that it was given attention knowing that our experts were gone.”

“Yes, Mr. Do. I changed the bulbs myself, since it was necessary for me.” I said as he uttered a surprised look.

“You should have called me, Mademoiselle. It is very dangerous. The next time it gets broken, please call us.” He said as I smiled and nodded. Then, he mentioned a few words of departure, and left.

I inspected the envelope before I opened the letter. There, I found that it was from my parents, who were at Hong Kong at the meantime.

     Greetings, Jjeolbae.

I knew that we agreed to a certain matter, where you are to stay in your room while we were entertaining our guests. It is by your request, of course, where your father and I agreed to. But since a few matters came up, I supposed that it would be changed. We are to welcome three people, my dear, and one is just your age. I just want to give him a welcome, so as to make him feel comfortable. I hope you bear with me, since this meeting is to provide a good future for our company. I am sorry for not telling you this ahead of time, since we are at Hong Kong today. This letter was printed my Mr. Do, by my request. Notify me if this does not reach you in time. Thank you!

     Yours Truly,

           Mom

I did not quite understand why changes occurred, but I decided to follow the instructions stated in the letter. I guessed I could create an effort that would help the company.

Only a few moments were spent until Mr. Do made his call for me. He said that my parents had come, and the guests are entering in five minutes.

It was not that long when I was ushered in to meet the person. There I just realized that no name was mentioned to me, and I did not know how to go with the person’s attitude.

“Don’t worry. I heard you have encountered the person more than once.”

I was slightly wondering whether the person was one of my classmates or friends, since Mr. Do seemed to know the person. There, the family came, and introduced themselves as the Lu’s.

The Lu’s were our long-time family friends and at the same time neighbors. They were one of the best people I had ever met. They were easy to talk with, and easy to access. But setting these aside, they were one of the noble families in the country.

Their son, however, is one of the ill-mannered persons I have ever encountered. It did not look like he was the son of the noble family. He was impatient and sort of a stinky person. I did not like him as much as I did with his parents.

“Good evening. I wasn’t expecting you here.” I said as he laughed and admitted the same.

“You come here once in a while, so I don’t expect myself to show you that much.” I said as his parents were led to the common room. He immediately sat down and removed his coat. I immediately took it and placed it neatly on the counter.

He just nodded at it and took a candy from the table. I then sat down in front of him.

“What are we going to do now?” He asked as I smiled.

“Eavesdrop? I do think that would be good.” I joked as he nodded and took my suggestion for consideration.

“Probably. That would not be bad, would it? And besides, it would be good if we take a peek on what the company is doing right now. Half-bad? I don’t think so.” He said and rose up from his seat. There, he walked towards the common room as I followed him.

“What are you doing? I thought it was clear that I should be separating you from their conversation.” I said as he patted my head in annoyance.

“It’s your job to keep the guests entertained. It would be good if you let me watch.” He said and stopped by the door.

I expected that we would be spotted by one of our maids or butlers, but I supposed it was their schedule in the entertainment room. As far as I knew, they played games every Friday to ease their moods.

I sat by the wall just after Luhan did. I did not find anything much of interest, since I had heard most of them in my parents’ morning conversations. Luhan stood up, bored of what he was hearing.

“Captured any good information?” I teased as he laughed and scoffed.

“Wait for it. They have not started the conversation regarding the partnership.” He said.

I did think he was planning on setting up a debate after hearing the news. I felt that he would stress that we were just using them, too. There, I placed my ear on the door to capture clear words.

“I plan on binding the two of them. My son and your Jjeolbae, yes. Just as any other companies would do, I would suggest that they start with a good friendship. The thing more than that would be complicated.”

“I do think it would be good if they tie the knot, just like our original plan. It would create more opportunities and a larger percentage for the businesses to succeed.”

“I take and accept that point.”

“I do think everybody agrees. We just need a couple of time for us to be ready to tell them.”

I was quite shocked with the words which they just dropped, but I did find that Luhan was disagreeing more with what they were saying. He was ill-mannered, you see. He was too obvious, and he was very blunt with his actions. He was careless.

“What do you mean of that, mom and dad?” He asked as all of them laughed.

“Looks like we don’t need more time for that. You heard. It was more than clear.”

I crossed my arms and frowned. I had decided not to move from where I was standing.
