Chapter 16 : Mom

Chapter 16

<Kai POV>

I looked at the clock. It was almost eleven, but Kae Li was not home yet. I was just about to call her when the door opened.

"I am home." Kae Li said as she took off her shoes placing them on the rack. In her hands were bags full of groceries. I immediately stood up and went to help her.

"Wow. Thats a lot of groceries." Kyung soo said as i placed them on the kitchen table.

"The fridge seemed quite empty when i opened it this morning." Kae Li replied as we loaded the food into the fridge.

"Chips!" Tao exclaimed as he snatched a bag of onion rings from my hands and ran off to the couch. Kae Li laughed.

" Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Hurricane Venus!" Kae Li's phone rang.

"I'll go back first!" she said and went to her room.

I saw her wallet lying on the kitchen table so i took it and walked towards her room. I was about to knock on the door when i realised that it wasnt full closed. i pushed it slightly open and saw that Kae Li was still on the phone and could not see me as she was facing her bed.

"No. i am not going to see him." She said.

The phone was on loud speaker so i could hear the what the other person on the line was saying too.

"But he is your father after all. And uncle is specially coming over to Korea to see you and how you are doing."

I could recognise the voice of the other person. It was Min Hyuk hyung.

"I don't have such a father." Kae Li said and hanged up the phone. She threw her phone on the bed and lied down.

I knocked on the door.

"You forgot your wallet." I said and placed it on her table.

"Thanks Oppa." She smiled at me.

I went to sit next her on the bed.

"So your dad is here to visit you?" I asked.

She looked up at me. "You heard it?"

I nodded. Kae Li sighed.

"Why don't you want to meet him?'

"You don't understand..."

And it was that night that i found out Kae Li wasn't as happy and cheerful on the inside as she is on the outside. She told me that her birth mother left her when she was six as her father was owing the loan sharks a lot of money due to gambling and could not take it staying with him.

"Sometimes he would even hit her and beat her up when he comes home drunk."She said. " She left on my seventh birthday. We then went to Singapore to find her as we thought she would come back to her home land as well as hide from the loan sharks. But we never found her." She stopped. I expected her to start tearing but she kept a straight face.

"He later found another woman in Singapore and got married to her." She stopped, this time, a tear rolled down her cheeks.

"He does'nt feel the least guilty. Mom left us because of him. Although he has stopped gambling now, i will never forget how he broke our family apart." and with that, she started to sob.

I didn't know what to do so i just hugged her hoping she might feel a little better. She continued to cry.

"Don't cry Kae Li." I said and patted her shoulder as she continued to bury her face in my chest sobbing.

"So are you going to meet him?" I asked after she calmed down a little.

She shrugged.

"I really don't know."

I gave her a pat on the shoulder.

"Don't think about it too much ok? Go to sleep early tonight." i said as i stood up to leave.

"Thank you Oppa. Sleep well."

I smiled and left.

<My POV>

"Umma! Umma! Dont Go!"

But she turned around and walked. Further and further and further until she dissapeared.

I jerked as my eyes shot wide open.

Just a dream.

I touched my face and it was soaked with sweat.

I checked my phone. 4 am in the morning. I walked to the kitchen to get a cup of milk but saw some one siting at the dining table.

"Kris?"

He turned around.

"Oh. Hi Kae Li. Cant sleep?" he asked.

I nodded as i placed my cup of milk on the table and sat opposite him.

"You cant sleep too?" i asked.

He held up a file. " Cant sleep tonight. Got to memorise this by tomorrow."

"Aren't you tired?"

"Coffee works." He said and we both giggled.

i finished my milk and placed the cup in the sink but .did'nt dare to go back to my room to sleep as i was scared that i would have that dream again.

"Kris?"

"Yeah?

"Can I sleep here on the couch?

"Here? Ok... Yeah sure." He smiled.
