Fulfilling A Dream

Chapter 6

Lily had just pulled into Sarah's drive. She was ready to have this conversation, she just needed to bite the bullet and tell Sarah how she really felt. Unfortunately she was all to aware of the consequences that her words held, but it was better than living a lie she told herself. She just needed to get it out first before seeing Sarah made her think there was no hope for them. Lily got out of the car and walked towards the door where Sarah was standing with the front door open waiting for her. "Before we go inside and have our chat there's something I need to tell you" Sarah said looking worried.

"Before you do I need to say this before I lose my nerve........ I love you and have done for about a year and if you'll have me I want to be your girlfriend" Lily blurted out, she was now standing awkwardly opposite a slightly stunned looking Sarah.

"Yes" said Sarah starring at Lily

"You'll be my girlfriend?" Lily said breaking into a smile.

"Yes........ yes I'll be you girlfriend" Sarah launched herself at Lily, standing on her tip toes and wrapping her arms around Lily's neck, holding on as if her life depended on it. Lily held on just as tight, her arms securely around Sarah's waist. They stayed like this for a good couple of minutes, just enjoying the safety of each others embrace. Pulling back a little Sarah said "There still something important I need to tell you, even more so now you're my girlfriend". Neither of them could help but smile at the sound of that word. It had taken them so long to get there.

"What is it Sarah?" Just as Lily had said that a little voice came from the hall.

"Sarah" Sarah looked slightly panicked at how Lily was going to react but she was just starring at the little girl. Sarah turned around and walked towards the little girl, picking her up, and turning back to face Lily.

"Lily this is Maizie my foster daughter, she is the important thing I wanted to tell you about. Maizie this is my girlfriend Lily" she smiled at Maizie then looked at a stunned Lily. "Should we go and find your toys then I can have a chat with Lily" Maizie nodded. Sarah reached out and took Lily's hand with her right hand, intertwining there fingers together and led her through to the living room. She placed Maizie on the rug next to the toy box. "Would you like a snack Maizie" The little girl nodded. "How does cheese and grapes sound?" Maizie nodded again and smiled. Sarah walked back through to the kitchen still holding Lily's hand. "Have a seat at the table and we'll have a chat and you can ask me anything".

Sarah cut up some cheese and grapes into little finger sized pieces and put them in a bowl, she decided a paper on would be safer. Sarah went back through to the living room and gave them to Maizie.
"Thank you" Maizie said quietly.

"You're welcome sweetheart" Sarah smiled at her. "I'll just be at the table with Lily if you need anything, ok" Maizie nodded.

Sarah walked back to the table, Lily still seemed to be in a state of shock, which Sarah thought was understandable, she still hadn't really processed what had just happened, she had a child living with her who was totally her responsibility and a girlfriend, all within the space of half an hour. It was almost laughable how crazy it all was.

Lily just sat at the table thinking. She knew that Sarah was preparing to adopt, that's how they got here in the first place. Sarah invited her over for dinner to ask her for a reference. She wouldn't be able to do that now she thought as the were girlfriends, she might be seen as too close and therefore biest. This made her smile but also panic, this meant that any child that was Sarah's responsibility was hers too really, she felt it anyway. Sarah came and sat opposite her, taking her hands in hers and just watching her face cautiously. "She has your eyes Sarah" was all Lily could say.

"What?"

"Maizie, I know it's not possible, but she's got the same dark chocolate eyes that you can get lost in for hours. Just like yours" Sarah smiled at this, she knew it wasn't possible but it gave her a strange sense of pride and warmth.

" I know this is a lot to take in. Would you like me to start from the beginning?"

"Yes please, but first......... can you just hold me for a minute" Lily said quietly.

"Of cause, come here" Lily relaxed into Sarah's outstretched arms. Sliding her own arms around Sarah's waist and rested her head on her chest, burrowing her face into Sarah's neck as she wrapped her arms securely around Lily. Sarah rested her chin on Lily's head, breathing in the smell of her shampoo to relax her. She hoped everything would be ok in the end. But for the time being she was holding the love of her life in her arms. They could have there chat later.
