Sarah was sitting on the bench-swing cross legged facing Lily, who was sitting with one leg tucked under her, the other hanging down towards the ground, there knees touching each other as the bench wasn't very long. Lily was gently swinging them back and forth with her leg. They were both just sitting enjoying the late afternoon warmth, each in their own worlds. Sarah prepping herself as to how to tell Lily of her plan to adopted.
How she would take it? How it would affect their relationship? She really didn't want to lose Lily over this. Although they were only friends she felt like she wouldn't be able to do this without her.
Lily was worrying about what Sarah wanted to tell her, she had seemed so serious when she said they needed to talk and she seemed kind of off, nervous and tense. She racked her brain as to what it might be, maybe she was ill, or leaving AHS, or maybe she had done something to upset Sarah. Had she maybe been a bit too friendly, they had also been quite touchy friends, hugs, kisses on the cheeks that kind of thing. That was one of the things she loved about Sarah, they were both quite physical people and she never shied away from a hug, she could always count on Sarah for affection. Maybe Sarah knew she was questioning whether she likes her more that just a friend. Before she could panic herself anymore Lily asked "So what did you want to tell me? You seemed really serious"Sarah shook her head as if shaking away all the doubt she had built up in her mind about telling Lily."For a while now I have been thinking....... realising that I'm not getting any younger......... maybe it's time........" Sarah trailed off.
"Sarah you're killing me here, what's going on? Have I upset you in some way? Is my reliance on you stopping you from having a partner, and settle down with someone, do you want me to give you space? Because I can, you mean so much to me but if that's what you want and it will make you happy I'll do it for you, I would do anything for you......."
"Lily calm down" Sarah hushed her, putting her hand on Lily's knee to comfort her, rubbing gentle circles with her thumb.
"You haven't done anything to upset me, the reason I'm so nervous about telling you is because I'm scared of losing you, what I'm about to tell you I'm going to need you more than ever, this whole thing is terrifying but also amazing and I'm really exited and I hope you can be as well for me. Ok. So. I'm going to adopt a child and I wondered if you could write a character reference for me" Sarah blurted the last bit and looked away from Lily and breaking eye contact.Lily's face broke out in a huge smile.
"Come here you muppet" Lily pulled Sarah towards her, wrapping her arms securely around her. Sarah wrapped her arms around Lily's waist, feeling safe and a huge sense if relief that Lily seemed ok with the whole thing. She couldn't imagine life without her, her best friend, ........ her everything? Sarah pushed those thoughts aside for another day and just enjoyed the comfort of Lily's embrace. Sarah's head was resting on Lily's left shoulder, she nuzzled her head closer into her neck, taking in a deep breath through her nose, smelling the familiar and safe scent of Lily's perfume. A mixture of honey and elder flower, it was subtle, but there.
Drawing back from each other, they settled back into the cushions on the swinging bench, looking at each other "I would be honoured to do that for you Sarah, but I never realised you were feeling that way, that you were running out of time or wanted children of you own. I mean you always gravitate towards any children on the set and Abby's two love you. You just never said anything to make me think, I guess""For along time I didn't think I did. I spent as much time as possible with Abby's children and loved being cool, fun Auntie and that was enough for me. But after Cherry and I separated I started spending even more time with them and started to want more. I saw how they would run to Abby, calling out for Mummy when she got home at the end of the day. There smiles and laughter when they reached her embrace and she pulled them close to her and just held them. I wanted to switch places with Abby, be the one coming home to my child at the end of the day not an empty house. I've got Millie and Alice, there my babies at the moment but I'm ready for a human baby not just my four legged, furry ones"
"I know what you saying, before Hamish and I separated we talked about it, I started to get exited about it so I can see your point completely and I will support you all the way. You've got me whether you like it or not Paulson" Lily said pulling a tung at Sarah.
Laughing Sarah thanked Lily for that, it meant a lot to hear her say all that, and gave her hope for the future.
PS. Alice and Millie really are Sarah's dogs IRL.
