It was now the afternoon. Lily and Sarah had talked about Maizie and they were both feeling a lot better about it all. The awkwardness between them had completely gone, they were back to being there usual selves around each other with a few added kisses. According to the sheet Bill gave Sarah , Maizie often took a nap around this time. Sarah thought it best to stick to her normal routine as much as possible. She walked through to the living room where Maizie was looking through some story books. She had found them on Sarah's book shelf after lunch, they had been hers when she was little and she just couldn't bare to part with them so had kept them.

" I think it's time for a nap Maizie" said Sarah crouching down next to her on the floor.

"No, not sleepy" Maizie scooted away from her.

" We can take a book with us to read before you go to sleep"

"Stay here, read story" Maizie said pointing to the sofa.

"Ok" Sarah said deciding not to push the matter too much on their first day together. If she was lucky she might fall asleep on the sofa whilst they read and then she could take her up to bed. "Which story are we going to read?" Maizie picked up the Winnie the Pooh one and smiled the cutest smile Sarah had ever seen. This little girl had won her heart over and she had only been here a day. Sarah picked Maizie and the book up and walked towards the sofa. "Lets snuggle up and read a story" she said grabbing a big fluffy blanket as she settled on the sofa. It was her favourite, it was so soft and perfect for snuggling up with. "Can Lily join us Maizie?" Maizie nodded. "Are you coming to join us Lily, you're missing out on snuggle and story time" Sarah called to her. Lily bounded through from the kitchen like a child, making Sarah laugh. Lily smiled at the two of them curled up on the sofa together "You two look very cute there" she said as she leaned over the back of the sofa a kissed Sarah on the for head. Maizie watched with interest, Lily looked at Sarah just like Daddy looked at Mummy. Lily came round the side of the sofa and slid in behind Sarah, spooning her, as Sarah had her feet tucked up with Maizie on her knee. Sarah settled back into Lily's chest and started to read.

Sarah looked down at Maizie as she finished the story, she was completely zonked out. She looked so cute and innocent, she was going through such a huge thing, losing her parents, and whilst she was still so young. Her heart broke for this little girl. Sarah hoped Bill found a good longterm foster family for her whilst she waited for an adoptive family. Sarah needed to talk to Lily about this whole adoption thing, having Maizie here had confirmed to her this is what she wanted. She wanted a family, she just hoped Lily did too.

Lily watched Sarah with Maizie, she seemed so natural with her. It made her love Sarah even more, that was possible. She had seen her around children before obviously, but there was something different about her when she was around Maizie, she seemed more maternal, more protective. Lily loved it. It also made her think about what it would be like if Sarah adopted. She herself had always intended on having children. Hamish and her had even begun planning for it but when they separated she thought it just wouldn't happen for her anymore, but now it was something very possible. Lily wasn't sure she was ready for that. But Sarah did make it look easy and amazing.

Sarah broke through her thoughts "I'm going to take her upstairs and put her in the bed, she'll be more comfortable there. Can you give me a hand?"

"Yeah, sure. Lead the way!" Sarah managed to stand, for a little girl Maizie was surprisingly heavy when she was asleep. She walked quietly up the stairs, Lily following. Lily pulled back the bedding in the spear room and Sarah placed her down and tucked her in.

"Night baby girl" Sarah said kissing her on the forehead.

"You're cute, come on lets go down stairs before we wake her" said Lily taking her hand as Sarah pulled a tong at her laughing. Lily lead them downstairs.

"Do you want to watch a movie while she's asleep? Todays just been crazy and all I want to do is cuddle up with you and feel safe. I missed you the last couple of days" she blushed.

"Yes, that sounds perfect. I missed you too" They walked to the sofa and cuddled up together, Sarah leaning her head on Lily's chest listen to the steady beat of her heart to relax her.

Maizie had been asleep for about an hour when Sarah heard loud cries coming from the spare room. She jumped up and ran up the stairs taking them two at a time. She had never moved so quickly but her maternal instinct took over and she needed to get to Maizie as fast as possible. Lily wasn't far behind. Sarah ran into the bedroom picking Maizie up and sitting her on her lap as she sat down on the bed.
"It's ok Maizie, your safe now, I'm here" she soothed, rubbing gentle, slow circles into her back.

"Mummy" Maizie sobbed. Sarah and Lily looked at each other, their hearts breaking, they would have given anything to give that girl her Mummy but it just wasn't possible.

"She's not here sweetheart. But you've got me, and Lily. She gives really good hugs" Sarah said still trying to sooth Maizie. Her cries were quietening as she nuzzled into Sarah's neck.

"Smell like Mummy" Maizie said looking at Sarah. "Mummy died"

"I know baby, but we'll keep you safe and love you until they find you a forever family to love you"

"Lily hug too" Maizie said pointing to Lily. Lily came and sat next to Sarah on her left behind Maizie. Sarah leaned into Lily with a sigh as Lily put her arms around them both and kissed Maizie on the head. It was going to be a long and emotional couple of days for them all but Lily didn't want to be anywhere else.
