Lauren's POV
I woke up to the sound of my alarm, which sounded like it was blaring in a high quality stereo system. I grabbed my phone to turn it off and realized the day. It was Friday. I had my date with Mason tonight. Suddenly, a rush of excitement ran through my body and I peeled out from under my covers, ready to start the day. Part of me was really excited for tonight, but another part of me wondered if I was doing the right thing. I liked Mason, I really did, but to be completely honest, I liked Shawn so much more.
I walked downstairs to make some coffee, only to find my mom sitting at the counter. "Oh, I didn't expect you to be home." I said yawning.
"I'm going in late today. Thought I could use some quality time with my daughter." She said with a smile, "Coffee is fresh in the pot." This was a shock. She never went into work late, not even on my birthday or like any other special day.
"Oh, thanks," I said grabbing a mug, "So, what's the big reason you decided to spend time with me this morning?"
"What makes you think I have an ulterior motive?" She asked surprised.
"Come on mom, it isn't everyday that your workaholic of a mother wants to spend time with you." I said laughing slightly.
"Ok, well, I do have something I want to talk to you about," she said with a concerned look on her face. I looked at her and nodded and she began talking, "I've noticed you've been getting quite close to that Shawn boy that lives next door."
"Mom, we're just friends I promise." That was a lie, "Besides, I actually have a date tonight.." I said, sipping my coffee.
My mom's face lit up. "Do you? Oh honey that's great. Is it a friend from school?"
"Yeah, um his name is Mason. He's Shawn's best friend. That's um, well he introduced us actually." This was weird. My mom never took any interest in my life. I was never one of those girls that was super close with their mom's growing up. I mean, she was always working so she was never really good at the whole "mother-daughter" bonding thing.
"Well.." she began to say.
"You know, this is kinda weird," I said laughing awkwardly, "I'm just going to go get ready for school now. Thanks for the coffee, and the, um, chat." I placed my mug down on the counter and started towards the stairs.
"Lauren, wait," my mom called after me. I turned around and looked at her, "Just, be careful. I don't want you getting all mixed up with two best friends. It never ends well." I rolled my eyes and headed up to the shower. It never ends well, kept replaying in my mind and I couldn't help but think that for once, my mother might actually be right.

"Lauren!" I heard from down the hall. I turned around to see Miranda coming towards me.
"What did I do now?" I asked sarcastically. But by the look on her face, she didn't seem angry. She actually seemed kind of happy to see me for once.
"I took your advice and talked to Shawn." she was gleaming. She seemed so happy, it was almost like I was talking to a different person. A person who didn't hate me for being friends with her boyfriend. A person who didn't just call me an ignorant slut like a week earlier. "We made up!"
Yeah and we made out. I couldn't tell her that obviously, but that was my first response to the statement. I shook my head and smiled at her. "Miranda that's awesome." I was happy for her, I really was, just not so much that she was making up with Shawn. Stop it Lauren. I thought to myself. Shawn was just my friend, I should be happy that he just made up with his girlfriend.
