When Death Loves Life and Life Loves Death

She was life. Bustling with happiness but at the same time with unbelievable sorrow. Mavis Vermillion let her beautiful flowing blond hair run over her shoulder as she watched the guild members of Fairy Tail prepare with a smile.

The Sakura Viewing Festival was coming up and activity among the guild members was even more lively than ever. The First Master of Fairy Tail loved this time of year just for that reason.

"Hey, First Master Mavis!" Wendy called to her with a big grin.

"Hello, Wendy!" Mavis smiled cheerily and waved at Wendy. The young bluenette made Mavis even happier. The optimism of a youth always brought a smile - or a bigger one - on her face.

He was death. Never a happy moment, always dull, always dark. Zeref Dragneel sighed as the grass he sat on shriveled up and turned brown, wilting and withering away until it died. The sight made him want to tear up and cry again. Anything, anyone he touched... they died. This eternal curse separated him from the one he loved.

Today, though, he was getting a chance to see Mavis for real, and he was determined to keep his unwanted powers under control.

Though the blossoms may die, Zeref thought, my Mavis won't perish from within my grasp ever again.

Mavis smiled wider than she ever had before and waved at the guild members who noticed her while setting up their picnic blankets. The stars glimmered in the beautiful dark blue night sky and the blossoms were starting to shine with the rainbow colours.

The setup was done sooner than Mavis thought;

Natsu, Lucy, Gray, and Juvia all sat by one another. Erza had even gotten the permission and had invited Jellal, whom she sat with. Bisca and Alzack sat together with Asuka, Mirajane sat by Laxus and Freed (love triangle though), Elfman with Evergreen, Lisanna with Bixlow, and even more.

Mavis beamed as she saw Wendy and Romeo sitting together with Happy and Carla.

Her delight soon faded and her expression darkened as she felt a certain presence nearby, but she started to feel more intrigued as she noticed that it wasn't actually as strong. Mavis also detected a bit of tension and struggling, and she looked at a nearby Sakura tree that was beginning to wilt and lose its colour, but nothing else around it was dying. This surprised Mavis and she went to check behind the blossom.

She wasn't surprised when she saw Zeref sitting under the now dying buds. Mavis allowed the smallest smile to adorn her features, though it was slightly pained and held a little sadness.

"Zeref..." she said softly.

"Hello, Mavis." Zeref looked up at the blond, and for the first time she saw something other than hunger and cruelty. She saw pain... pain and affection. His dark eyes were full of regret and broken love.

Mavis gasped and fell gently to the ground on her knees in shock.

Zeref began to tear up.

Have I failed? He thought. I tried so hard, and yet-

His train of thought was cut off when he felt a pair of arms around him.

Zeref looked down and saw Mavis there, embracing him and still being... alive. He took her up in his arms and they both sat there, enjoying the peace.

Death had fallen for Life and Life had returned the feelings.
