The Journey To Safety

Aaron's POV

We are now on a train heading to this so called school for the gifted. I look to Jade, wanting to ask her about her brother, and this place we are heading to, but I find her asleep. She is one of those people that looks so peaceful when they sleep. Her forehead isn't creased, and her full lips are closed perfectly.

Her head was leaning against the window. The train hit a small bump causing her head to hit the window a bit hard. She momentarily opens her eyes but then closes them again. I brush the strands of hair behind her ear. Even after eveything that she did, everything that I saw... I still find her cute... Is that strange?

The guy who hole punches our tickets is almost at our seats when I realize we have a dilemma. "Jade... Jade." I whisper to her as I gently shake her. "Jade."

"Hmm?" She opens her eyes, not mad that I woke her.

"We don't have tickets." Her eyes wander to the man and then widen.

"Ohh... umm... You any good at sweet talken?" She says with a bit of a southern accent.

"Does it look like I'm his type?" This causes her to laugh, and that makes me feel good. But just then the man appears. The old lady that sits across from us is staring. Her curly grey hair is pulled back into a tight bun, kept away from her aging face.

"Tickets." He takes the old woman that's sitting in front of us' ticket then looks at us. Now that he's right in front of me, I can clearly see that he looks just like the guy from the Polar Express movie. The old lady laughs and taps the man on the shoulder.

"Excuse me. This is so embarassing, but I seem to have misplaced my grandchildrens' tickets."

Jade's POV

The man looks at the lady then at us. I'm not so good at socializing... Thank goodness for Aaron.

"Ohh Gran," He laughs lightheartedly, reaches forward, and gently taps her leg, "I'm sorry sir, she's a bit forgetful." The man nods and smiles at the lady.

"Oh I understand, my mother is getting that way as well." He laughs and Aaron joins in. I smile at how good he is at this. "If you have the money, that'll be $10.00." The old lady pulls a ten out of her purse and hands it to the man.

"Thank you dear, their mother would've killed me if I had forgotten again... or worse... put me in a home." She winks at the man and we all laugh. Sometimes it amazes me how nice some strangers can be. I read the man's name tag: Ted. Ted, I say to myself, God bless you. Aaron and I look nothing alike, nor do we look like this old lady in any way. I just smile until Ted leaves, giving us the time to thank the lady.

"Thank you so much Ma'm." I say in the nicest voice possible.

"Yes, thank you." Aaron repeats, "We make a heck of a team." And he winks at her. He's trying too hard.

"Oh no problem dearies." She leans forward, "I know what you are." Aaron and I look at eachother worriedly.

"R-Really?" We ask in unison.

"Don't worry dear, my real grandson is just like you. I'm traveling to pick him up. His parents don't want him anymore after 'the incident '." Aaron looks down and looks to be in deep thought. His eyes are shut tight as he runs his fingers through his hair. All of a sudden he isn't that talkative, nice boy. He looks scarred and alone.

"Well best of luck to him." I say.

"Thank you dear, and good luck to the two of you."
