Chapter Twenty-Six: Retreival

Retrieval

Jade's POV

Aaron and I decide to work with the kids another day. Right now I'm throwing a ball to Roxy, a thirteen year old girl that can turn into a fox. I'm suppose to be helping her with her timing, because her problem is that once she switches, she can't switch back quickly. For the last five times, we've had to get the Professor to help with her. "Alright, now remember! Jump and switch then land and change!" Her short choppy brown hair is pulled into two high pony tails. They don't even move as she sprints down the field. I throw the red ball and she jumps. Midair, she turns into a small brownish red fox. She lands with the ball in her mouth. She's large for a fox but still tiny compared to other creatures. "Alright, now change!" She closes her eyes tight but isn't able to. She trots over to me and drops the ball in my hands. I pet her on the head. "It's alright girl, take your time."

A bunch of older girls sitting by the fountain start giggling and pointing at Roxy. Her ears droop and she pulls her tail between her legs. "Hey!" I yell at them and chuck the ball right at one of the blonde girls. She gets hit in the stomach and falls back into the fountain. "Don't listen to them Ro-" I turn to see Roxy running off into the forest. "Roxy!" I shout over to Aaron, who is dealing with a bunch of little boys. "Aaron! Roxy's running again!" I sprint after her into the woods. I hear an animal's whimpers and sprint faster. "Roxy!" I stop dead in my tracks when I see a now human Roxy being back up against a tree by a large black wolf. It's coat was unlike any I have ever seen. It seemed to me every shade of black possible, and when it moves, the light shimmered across its back like it was a black diamond. It's dark grey face blended perfectly with the rest of its body.

"Jade..." Roxy grasps the tree with her hands.

"Hold on Rox." I slowly walk towards the wolf, it starts to bare it's teeth at me. "I don't wanna hurt you..." I hold out my hands, trying to show it that I mean no harm. It lets out a growl and I step back.

"Jade!" Aaron runs up a good few yards behind me and spots me. He disappears.

"Now shhh... I'm just gonna grab the nice girl and walk away okay?" Roxy gets poked by something but then hushes as she is pulled into the dark side of the tree. The wolf notices and pounces at them but I tackle it and wrap my arms around its torso. I squeeze hard so that it'll calm down but it's too strong. It scratches me across my shoulder blade. I pull our a knife and try to intimidate it but it attacks me and I slice at its paw. It yelps and trots off and I feel slightly guilty. I turn and sprint back to the mansion.

"Jade! You okay!" Aaron sprints over to me and puts his hand on my shoulder but pulls away when he feels blood. "And you're hurt again..." I shrug it off.

"Don't worry, it's just a scratch." I look around for Roxy. "She okay?" Aaron crosses his arms and smiles.

"Yeah, that's the fastest she's ever changed back. She was scared out of her mind though." I nod.

"Yeah, if there are wolves in the woods it's not safe for the kids to be out here alone." We look at eachother seriously and laugh, realizing that almost all of the kids are capable of taking care of themselves. I playfully punch him in the arm and turn to walk away. "Well I'm gonna go get wrapped up. See ya at dinner."

It's dark by the time Aaron and I head up for bed. He had to pull me away from practically eating the desert table. I walk into my room and crash on the bed, dozing off. I wake with a start when I hear a howl coming from the front of the mansion. I open my door and sprint into the hallway just as Aaron does the same. He's wearing sweatpants and a cutoff shirt, his hair is all messed up telling me that he had been asleep as well. "You don't think..." He nods with wide eyes and sprints ahead of me.
