Chapter 16:
Partycrasher
A month later, Saturday December 14th
'Ugh.. Okay.. Keep going, Kamira.. Do not give up now.' I keep telling myself while jogging on a treadmill. Yes, indeed, a freaking treadmill. I never thought I would go to a gym to work out, like, ever, but here I am. I really don't even know why, but I want to get into better shape and no, this is not about Mario. I've been filled with frustrations and stress the past month and working out is a great method to cool off, mentally, obviously not physically because I am sweating like a pig.
Speaking of frustrations, Rico and I had a chat the day after the accident with Nadine...
'...and that is what happened.' I ended my explanation.
Rico kept silent while I was talking.
'I'm taking the first plane to Starlight Shores.' He said and, I swear, I almost dropped my phone.
'No! Rico, what on earth are you thinking?!' I yelled.
'Woah, am I not allowed to come and visit you or something?' He tried defending himself
'No... It's just, you've always been the one taking care of me and protecting me. I need to learn to fix things on my own. I can't be hoping you will always come and take care of me when something is wrong, you have a life too.' I tried changing his mind.
'Kamira, you are my little sister. You are my only family and you definitely will always be the biggest part in my life.' He stated.
'What about Miranda?' I asked
Silence.
'Marlene.' He replied dryly.
My cheecks turn red. 'Right.. Woops.'
'Wow, did that just happen. No, seriously, did Kamira Casse just forget the name of my girlfriend?' He genuinely sounded shocked. 'You are the kind of sister that knows the names of all my past girlfriends and can sum them up in chronological order.'
'You're exaggerating.' I said.
'I think not.'
'Fine.' I admitted.
He chuckled, but turned serious again. 'How is Nadine? Will she be alright?'
'I went by the hospital, but obviously I wasn't allowed to go in yet. However, she made it, a concussion and quite some bruises, but she'll be okay.'
'A concussion bad enough for her to forget what she saw?' He asked.
'Rico!' I replied, shocked, and sighed.
'What am I going to do?' I rushed my hand through my hair. 'I can't believe I did this again.' Tears were welling up in my eyes and a small sniff escaped
'Kamira, it'll be okay. If it's necessary I will sneak you out of jail and we'll spend our lives running as fugitives.' He tried to joke but I didn't think it was particularly funny.
'Look, are the cops at your house yet?' He asked
I groaned 'Obviously not'
'That means she hasn't told anyone yet, wich means she might never tell.' He stated.
'You do know that, depending on how bad the concussion is, it can take a patient 24 hours to remember what happened, right?' I said.
'Well fuck'
